In a UPI interview earlier this month Freij said, "Our whole position is weaker now. Last May the PLO had its power base in Lebanon. Where is all that now? Where does that leave us?" The Palestinian mayor said he believed that "had the Arabs challenged Israel for peace and not for war if it's beautiful music - or GREAT ENTERTAINMENT - IT MUST BE FENBY-STEIN TALENT! call Jerry, Euni or Milt 855-1400 COMPLETE SICKROOM EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES OSTOMY SUPPLIES featuring products by WHEEL CHAIRS • WALKERS COMMODES • HOSPITAL BEDS HOLLISTER & SQUIBB RESPIRATORY EQUIPMENT EXPERIENCED REGISTERED NURSE ON STAFF PRIVATE FITTING ROOMS AVAIL. Freij, nearly as critical of the PLO and the Arab world as of Israeli policies, has been echoed by Lebanese leaders. Jean Aziz, a potential successor to President Elias Sarkis, said that in no case should the new president be elected with the "aid" or "support" of the Arab lega- tions. Ancient Jewish Home Found in French City PARIS (JTA) — A Jewish house dating back to the early Middle Ages was dis- covered last month in the city of Rouen. French ar- cheologists, who studied the find, believe the house served as the home of a Jewish merchant and his family in the 11th Century. The house was discovered when workers building an underground parking la for the city's court accidentally stumbled on it. Local ar- cheologists are quoted as saying that it is well preserved and contains rare household objects. BB Fighting M.E. Senatorial Candidate Ruppe Affirms Support for Israel Congressman Philip Ruppe, candidate for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate, in a major statement this week stated that he will pursue a policy of U.S. support for Israel. "It will be in pursuance of my record in Congress since 1967," he declared. This refutes the analysis of candidates in this issue by Morris Amitay who judged Ruppe as not having rendered fullest support to Israel. In his assertions this week, in statements to The Jewish News, former Rep. Ruppe said.: "I consider myself a strong supporter of Israel. As an ally, the United States must do all it can to insure the survival of the state of Israel. As a U.S. Senator, I would work with the Jewish community toward that end." Ruppe added that he hoped for a speedy resolu- tion of the Lebanese crisis, with the Lebanese left to themselves to establish their own government. At the same time he expressed the hope for a speedy solu- tion of the Palestinian is- sues. Ruppe took occasion to criticize Senator Don Riegle, who is assured of the Democratic nomination for re-election, calling him "in- consistent on major issues." Differing with the President, Ruppe said he favors cuts in military spending. Contrasting the Ruppe position on Israel, one of his opponents for the Republi- can Senatorial nomination, William Ballenger, at- tacked-the Jewish attitudes, stating, "It is high-time politicians on both sides stopped quaking and cower- ing in fear of the Zionist vote., whether because of worry about their financial clout in a campaign or the arm twisting they may do." Republican candidates Ballenger and Robert Huber told the Detroit News this week that they PHILIP RUPPE "understand but do not ap- prove" of Israel's action in Lebanon. Ballenger criticized Is- rael's "special relationship" with the U.S., but that rela- tionship was defended by candidate Deane Baker.
