A good man and a wise
man, may, at times, be
angry with the world, and at
times grieved for it; but no

man was ever discontented
with the world if he did his
duty in it.

"An important German
educator was once asked by
young Germans what he
thought about the guilt of
Hitler's Germany for the
deaths of the millions of
Jews. He answered, 'No, you
do not have to feel guilty for
the sins of your country. But
it is your privilege to blush
for it.' "
The above quotation is
from the introduction to
"Signs of Life," subtitled
"Jews from Wuerttemberg,"
edited by Walter Strauss
and published by Ktay.
The volume, consisting of
500 memoirs, contains a
map of Wuerttemberg's de-
stroyed Jewish settlements,
greetings from Albert Eins-
tein, Wuerttemberg's most
famous Jew, and covers the
period 1933-1981.
The aim of this publica-
tion was stated by the in-
itiator of the project, Walter
Strauss, in the following
letter:
"We feel that the time
has come to create a re-
cord of our experiences.
We owe this to our chil-
dren and grandchildren,
who are entitled to know
their roots. They should
remember how a group.of
immigrants and perse-
cutees started from
scratch and began new
lives in their new home-
land."
In response to Strauss'
letter, the former
Wuerttembergers, in the
form of memoirs, described
their parents' and their own
backgrounds prior to Hit-
ler's coming to power in
Germany and recorded
their experiences during
the early years of his bar-
baric rule. They noted that
the majority of the German
Jews were engaged either in
business or in the profes-
sions.
Unfortunately, in 1938
the Nazi government either
revoked or annulled many
of their business and profes-
sional licenses. The year
1938, moreover, will be re-
membered for the shatter-

ing event, known in history
as "Kristallnacht," that oc-
curred throughout the
length and breadth of Ger-
many on the night of Nov. 9.
Recollections of that awe-
some pogrom, still vivid in
the minds of the former
Wuerttemburgers, were re-
counted in many of the
memoirs:
"During the Crystal
Night, November 1938,
our store was demolished
by the Nazis and my hus-
band had to spend six
weeks in the Dachau
concentration camp."
"Our world collapsed dur-
ing Kristallnacht in 1938.
My father, gravely wounded
in the First World War, was
beaten up during the
round-up of Jews in Ulm
and sent to Dachau. Our
rabbi, Dr. Cohn, died later
as a result of that action."
"During the Kris-
tallnacht turmoil, my
father rescued a Torah from
the synagogue. It is now in a
Baltimore synagogue."
As a result of the persecu-
tions, many Jews fled Ger-
many. And everywhere
they settled, as delineated
in the memoirs, they be-
came productive and loyal
citizens.
This review would
have been incomplete
had I not mentioned that
Detroiters Use and Alex
Roberg, both outstand-
ing Hebraists and proud
Jews, and former
Wuerttembergers, have
enriched our community
culturally and demog-
raphically.
To quote Ilse: "The crown
of our lives are our 20
grandchildren and my 94-
year-old mother who has
been making her home with
us for 32 years" (til 120).
