THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS • WitilliG & DOING IN STYLE Danny Raskin's The Best of Everything WHEN IT FIRST opened March 30, promo- tion read, "Greektown Comes to Southfield" . . . A few operators of the famed downtown sector objected to this line of advertising. It was ultimately dropped . . . with theiteady flow of rapidly growing customers \ maintaining that many eateries in Greektown wish they were as good as Dimit- ri's of Southfield, on South- , field, just north of 10 Mile, had become. ‘-) Seating is for 290 people in three rooms . . . each separated by brick_ walls with arches . . . The center room with bar and dining area was formerly the lower level of King's Arms, Land- ing and Sultan's Table . . . On one side is a cocktail lounge with all booths and another bar . . . The third room is Dimitri's of South- field's main dining area. In the rear is a private room with glass doors ac- commodating up to 20 people. Decor is earthtones, beige and broWn in two rooms . . . rusty rose colors in the all-booth lounge . . . recessed ceil- ing lights and drapes be- tween booths in the din- ing rooms . . . A chan- delier costing $15,000 brought here from California and put up piece by piece, hangs ele- gantly in the foyer as people enter this showplace. A moving platform, newest helpful accommoda- tion for handicapped and el- derly people, has been in- stalled . . . with extensive use . . . It is, however; not restricted to handicapped . . . and can be used __by anybody. The kitchen at Dimitri's of Southfield . . . compris- ing 2,000 square feet of completely tiled floors and walls . . . is always kept clean. It is a common occur- rence to see owner Dimitri Syros take people on an in- spection tour of the kitchen during rush hours . . . It is also a maze of stainless steel, with three walk-in coolers and freezers . . . cooking and preparatory areas galore . . . nine cooks and untold numbers of kitchen helpers. Dimitri's of Southfield employs about 80 people in the lower level restaurant that has become the talk of \I the city in so short a time . . People come downstairs and are amazed at its beauty. About owner Dimitr-i Syros . . . usually there during lunch and dinner . . . seven days a week . . . He started in the res- taurant business as a night cook 27 years ago at Whittier Gold Cup Room and Detroit Yacht Club . . . Then chef at Huck's on Nine Mile and Jeffer- son, where he won a culi- nary contest with lemon soup and beef strogonoff. - In 1966, Dimitri went \ into business for himself . . . opening the Rainbow Bar-B-Q on Six Mile and Mound . . . In 1972 he opened his first Dimitri's on 12 Mile and Schoenen- . . . Then came other Dimitri's restaurants . . . All have been sold except the one on 11 Mile and Gratiot, run by three loyal employees, so he can concentrate his entire efforts on the biggest of them all . . . Dimitri's of Southfield. His two sons are now learning the restaurant business with their dad . . the master . . . 18-year-old Paul Syros works during the day . . . and 15-year-old Nick Syros is there in the evening. The entire operation is a complete team effort . . . making it conducive for fine, relaxed dining . . . Waitresses in the afternoon and waitresses and waiters in the evening . . . All help- ing each other . . . No such thing as passing customers because, "It's not my sta- tion." Valet parking is op- tional . . . and the young men taking care of the parking lot are among the most courteous, effi- cient and personable fel- lows to be found any- where. Dimitri's of Southfield has a comfortable, intimate atmosphere . . . Pictures on the walls are in very good taste . . . as is the entire restaurant decor. - During the day, those beautiful, meaningful, pleasant_smiles are on Vic- kkie Patera, day manager, and Michelle Bernstein, hostess . . . with competent attentiveness of assistant day manager Louis Bricolas . . . Pleasing customers in the evening with their charm and friendliness are managers Pierre Georgelas and John Bricolas. From the moment we entered recently, greeted by the pleasant, gracious smile of evening hostess Linda Caruso, it was an evening's experience of culinary and pleasantry delight . . . Our waiter, Fonda Tsironis, courteous and attentive, was leaving to take hotel and restaurant manage- ment at University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Seated in a corner booth overlooking the crowded main dining room, the surroundings were of simple but classic elegance . . . Beige stucco walls and ceil- ing, drapes between each booth, beige tablecloths beneath clear lucite tops on round tables, brown cloth napkins, Grecian statues, all chairs at ta- bles padded in varied colors and with arms . . . Buspersons like our fine young gent, Jose Jimenez, clearing dishes and bringing coffee or excellent brewed decaf- feneited at all times.
