M.- ALLAN President 44:g0 dEMOLOGIST CHAM018,EMOGIST James Watt Criticized for Threat to Israel WASHINGTON (JTA) — Jewish leaders and major political figures are react- ing angrily to a warning by Interior Secretary James Watt that U.S. support for Israel could end if "liberals" in the American Jewish community continue to op- pose the Administration's energy policies. Many have demanded Watt's resigna- tion. The implicit threat was contained in a letter from Watt to Israel's Ambas- sador to Washington, Moshe Arens. The letter; JAMES WATT dated June 17, stressed ef- forts to end "America's de- crude energy" and observed, pendency upon foreign . "If the liberals of the Jewish community join with the other liberals of this nation to oppose these efforts, they will weaken our ability to be a good friend of Israel. Your supporters in America need to know these facts." Watt met with leaders of the Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith Wed- nesday and admitted that the letter was "a .mistake" and that American Jews had "every right to be up- set." , The White House Dis- avowed the letter. Deputy Press Secretary Larry Speakes said, "The main quarrel we have with it is it does not represent Adminis- air and sunlight, tration policy . . . It is not the President's viewpoint." The initial reaction from the White House Friday had been that the letter was "unfortunate." But Watt in- sisted, in various public statements over the weekend that he had in- tended no threat and de- fended his position. Sen. Daniel Moynihan (D. NY), accused the Sec- retary of "bare-knuckled bigotry" and declared that if -Watt does not re- sign "President Reagan should dismiss him im- mediately." Reps. Toby. Moffett (D- Conn.) and Tom Lantos (D-Calif.) wrote to Reagan over the weekend: "Mr. Watt's remarks were highly inappropriate and inflam- matory. They suggest that America's foreign policy is in some way linked to `Jewish' and 'liberal' sup- port of the Administration's energy policy." The Washington Post quoted Watt as saying, "There's no threat intended. To have a threat, you have to say we'd do something if they (American Jews) didn't do something." His mes- sage., he claimed, was, "If you don't support this, the Reagain Administration is going to go ahead doing what's right whether you support it or not." The letter came to light when it appeared last week in the Washington . illy* SAVE 7 C C •■ •• q EP gnu 4 1•■ UP TO MN MOP ihO /0 Horizontals. Expires 8-13-82 Pro PLO Group Sponsors Rally , on Lebanon NEW YORK (JTA) — The "November 29 Coali- tion" held a 'teach-in" on the war in Lebanon Sunday that drew some 1,500 people to Town Hall in midtown Manhattan. The all-day rally was originally to have taken place at the Diplomat Hotel across the street, but was cancelled, according to the hotel's management, when it became clear that the sponsoring organization was a front for the Palestine Liberation Organization. Comparing Israel's oper- ation in Lebanon to the Nazi Holocaust, the panelists, who included pro-PLO Americans, Lebanese, and Palestinian academicians, as well as an Israeli anti- Zionist attorney, Lea Tsemel, condemned the in- vasion and derided the U.S. attempts to evacuate the PLO from Beirut. Also attending the rally was Zehdi Labib Terzi, the PLO's permanent observer at the United Nations. Explosion Rips Jewish Home PARIS (JTA) — A house belonging to a prominent Jewish family was blown up by a bomb last Saturday morning near Toulon in the south of France. The house which is owned by a Marseilles manufac- turer, Daniel Cohen, was empty at the time. Police investigators said they found leaflets at the scene inscribed "Death to the Jews." Times, a recently estab- lished daily of strong conservative views. There was no indications how the newspaper ob- tained the month-old let- ter. Last week, Watt sent a letter to 28 Congressmen criticizing them for attack- ing his off-shore drilling proposals at a time when "Israel was embroiled in war concerning her ow survival and a liberated Lebanon."
