Peter Allen Traces Armageddon
Lesson to The Yom Kippur War'

Peter Allen, who has to
his credit a number of im-
portant books on military
and business topics, views
the Yom Kippur .War of
1973 as an Armageddon. In
"The Yom Kippur War"
(Scribner's) he has this to
say in explanation:
"Armageddon, according
to the Apocalypse, will be
e scene of the battle of the
'---treat day of God. Its most
likely location is thought to
be at the site of the previous
great battle — Megiddo, a
city of ancient Israel. There
is, however, another possi-
bility. 'Armageddon' could
be a corruption of the words
mo'ed,' which mean 'the
mountains where the Gods
meet.' In modern terminol-
ogy that is Mount Hermon
— the Golan Heights."
The thoroughness of Al-
len's analysis of the events
which found Israel nearly
crushed, in grave danger,
but emerging triumphant,
is of exceptional merit. It is
one of many books already
published on the agonized
issues and threats which
were experienced on that
Yom Kippur day. Yet it at-
tains importance out of the
new approach in a study of
such immense military im-
portance that it reversed a
threat which could have de-
, stroyed the powerful Jewish
state.
The personalities in the
struggle described
emerge in interesting
fashion. Because of the
dominant role now being
played by Ariel "Arik"
Sharon, the present Is-
rael minister of defense,
the account of his ac-
tivities as the military
genius who reversed the
Egyptian early success is
of special interest at this
time.
Of course, Golda Meir and
Moshe Dayan are among
those who are considerably
involved in that conflict.
Then there is the role of
Anwar Sadat, and the early
friendship of Egypt with
Russia, and the manner in
which it was abrogated all
account for the extensively -
researched history of a most
important chapter in the
history of Israel and the
Middle East.
Because of his emphasis
on the Middle East as an
Armageddon, Allen's com-
ment on current applica-
tions to the results of the
Yom Kippur War are espe-
cially significant. He corn-

"In 1973, Israel failed to
use her military strategy
of immediate retaliation
as a warning that she
could defeat her
neighbors in war. Israel
is certainly ahead of the
Arabs in the develop-
ment of bombs, and so
small a country cannot
rely on the superpower
concept of deterrance by
second strike capability.
"Future Middle Eastern

be nine-day wonders of
breathtaking maneuvers

problems is found very
quickly, there may be just
one or two awesome bangs
heralding the final Ar-
mageddon."

The agonies that were
caused by that war for
Golda Meir, Moshe Dayan
and others then in charge of
Israeli affairs, offer an in-
sight into the nation's reac-
tions. They are part of an
intensive study which pro-
vides guidance to tiv milit-
ary aspects of an embattled
people. Allen's "The Yom
Kippur War" acceptably
serves as an additional
timely evaluation of Israel's
role in the Middle East:
