Mahaffey View

Editor, The Jewish News
The July 9 issue of The
Jewish News gave major
) coverage to Councilwoman
Maryann Mahaffey who is a
- candidate for the Demo-
cratic nomination for Con-
gress in the 17th District.
Mahaffey "declared
elf obligated, if elected,
.icdealing with the Middle
;) East crisis, to treat the
Camp David decisions as a
`must' in confronting the
i needs."
She did not, however, de-
scribe what the needs are,
what her attitude to the au-
tonomy- provisions are, how
she views Israel's presence
=r ,. in Judea and Samaria and
Gaza, how Israel responds
to the physical violence of
the Arab youths in this
( area, how she views Israel's
j promotion of village leagues
j

;

who. in opposition to the
hate-inciting mayors of
Arab towns and villages
and PLO terrorists operat-
ing there, want to solve the
issue of Arab rights and au-
tonomy by peaceful co-
existence.
Nor did she venture to
make any comments on the
situation in Lebanon and
Israel's efforts to rout the
PLO once and for all and to
bring about the withdrawal
of Syrian occupying forces
from Lebanon, to give this
country a chance to recon-
stitute itself into a free,
democratic, sovereign na-
tion that it once was.
Ms. Mahaffey instead
chose to describe her ef-
forts of the past, which
are quite commendatory,
but said not a word of the
grave concerns that the
electorate of the 17th Dis-
trict have about Israel at
the present and a peace

that will insure her secu-
rity, sovereignty and
survival. Those are prob-
lems that she will have to
deal with as a con-
gressperson, "if elected."
I want to recall an inci-
dent which happened in
September 1980. Tom
Hundley of the Detroit Free
Press reported that in wel-
coming Mr. Tawfik Zayad,
the then mayor of Nazareth
who represents the Com-
munist Party (Rakah) in
the Knesset and is an ar-
dent supporter of the PLO
(he gave some very inciting
words at the meeting with
the Detroit Common Coun-
cil). Ms. Mahaffey said to
him, "We join with you."
She subsequently claimed
in a letter to the editor of
The Jewish News that the
report was an "inaccurate
coverage of her statement"
and followed with an almost
verbatim recitation of her
support and friendship for
Israel and her personal con-
victions, etc.
In Purely Commentary of
Oct. 3, 1980, you wrote as
follows, inter alia: "It was
an interesting letter that
condemned prejudice and at
the same time took advan-
tage of a platform for the
Palestinians . . . (She fell)
into a common error of as-
suming that defense of Is-
rael's role as a sovereign
state negates Palestinian
justice .. .
"Ms. Mahaffey's attitude
is commendable to a degree,
but when it continues unre-
stricted, giving the impres-
sion that Israel's existence
is a bar to Arab and Palesti-
nian nationalism, at a time
when 22 Arab states are
ganged up to destroy Israel
— with Egypt as an excep-
tion as a result of the Camp
David Decisions — then she
renders an injustice and
only plays into the hands of
the PLO . . . (thus) negates
her own sympathies (for Is-
rael."
We were fortunate to be
represented in the 17th
District by a Con-
gressman of high integ-
rity, honesty, sincerity
and full understanding
for Israel translated into
positive and meaningful
actions in Congress, Mr.
William M. Brodhead. We
want his successor to be
of the same quality and
sensitivity to his con-
stituents.
Ms. Mahaffey owes the
electors of District 17 con-
crete answers to the issues
posed in the first paragraph
of this letter, if she wants to
be taken seriously as a can-
didate for Congress.
