The Chop House, which has won the Holiday award for dining excellence con- tinuously since 1954, was opened nearly 50 years ago by Lester and Sam Gruber. Lester Gruber, who eventu- ally bought his brother's share of the business, has been entertaining offers to sell the restaurant for sev- eral years. He is a collector of modern art, a member of the board of governors of Wayne State University and an ap- pointed member of Detroit's Arts Commission. Along with their gourmet foods and world-famous wine list, the Gruber-owned restaurants are credited with launching the career of Barbra Streisand. Accord- ing to the Detroit News Sunday magazine, it was Gruber who asked the Brooklyn-born singer to entertain at the Caucus Club in 1962. Miss Streisand worked there for about a year. until Jack Parr booked her for the To- night Show.
