of honor at the annual
Weizmann dinner, Oct. 18,

The one-time child
prodigy, whose career
started in his native Po-
land in the late 1800s and
reached across a century
to a triumphant world-
wide farewell tour in
1976, will be escorted
from his home in Geneva
to New York by Prof.
Michael Sela, president
of the Weizmann Insti-
tute.
Zubin Mehta, conductor
of the New York and Israel
philharmonic orchestras,
and Avery Fisher, patron of
the arts who is the donor of
the famed concert hall bear-
ing his name at the Lincoln
Center in New York, will
serve as the honorary
chairmen for the dinner.

Thoughts on Israel Invasion

This is Safed, Israel.
Safed is about 50- kilometers
from the Lebanese border.
While driving up to this
beautiful Galilean city from
Tel Aviv, I began to under-
stand the full magnitude
not only of Israel's dazzling
victory over the PLO and
Syria, but what a military
and political triumph this
conflict represents as well
for the United States.
On the highways I saw
long caravans of Israeli
army trucks returning from
Lebanoh loaded with
freshly-painted Soviet
---tanks and other he.avy Rus-
sian military equipment. It
turns out that Israel's
armed forces have captured
literally mountains of ad-
vanced military hardware
provided to the PLO and
Syria by the Soviet Union
and Libya, much of it paid
for by Saudi Arabia.
One informed observer
here estimates that the
PLO and Syria had
stockpiled enough ar-
maments to outfit an
army of about one million
troops. So much for their
moderate, peace-keeping
intentions!
Israel's armed forces also
tested with brilliant success
the most sophisticated elec-
tronic devices that de-
stroyed Syria's entire mis-
sile batteries in Lebanon
and many of their latest
Soviet tanks and planes.
Those actions demonstrated

Israel's military genius, but
they also proved the deci-
sive superiority of Ameri-
can military technology
over that of Russia.
While Israelis I have met
are proud of their victories,
they are everywhere
equally concerned over the
loss of Lebanese lives. Major
Israeli relief efforts reveal
that beneath the toughness
and determination to sur-
vive, these Israeli Jews = in
the words of the Talmud —
are also compassionate sons
and daughters of a compas-
sionate Father.
