Jack Lemmon Praises Spirited' Israelis

11 1

(Copyright 1982, JTA, Inc.)

HOLLYWOOD — Actors
Jack Lemmon. Walter
Matthau and their families
toured Israel recently.
Lemmon is thrilled about
the country, admires the in-
domitable spirit of her citi-
zens, the youthful en-
thusiasm and optimism of
those who face sheer in-
surmountable difficulties,
economically and politi-
cally. "I never saw so many
smiling faces on children
and teenagers; even those
who are handicapped and
crippled remain cheerful
when talking to their
friends from abroad." •
Lemmon has just re-
turned from the Cannes
Film Festival where he re-
ceived the Palm D'Or, Best
Actor's Award for his per-
formance in Costa - Gavras'
"Missing." The story of the
disappearance of Charles
Horman during the Chilean
uprising which started with
the murder of President Al-
lende is a true one. Edmund
Horman, the father, whom
Lemmon portrays on the sc-
reen, reflects the kind of
challenge Lemmon thrives
on.
Since his 1973 Academy
Award for "Save the Tiger,"
in which he played a small-
time Jewish manufacturer
in mid-life crisis, Lemmon's
most recent roles have been
as an agonized nuclear en-
gineer (with Michael Doug-
las) in "The China Syn-
drome," for which he won
numerous prizes, and the

dying comedian in "Tri-
bute," for which he gar-
nered his seventh Oscar
nomination.
The highlight of the trip
to Israel. where Lemmon
and Matthau were joined by
Monty Hall and his wife,
was a visit with Prime
