Rabbi Will Be Beth Shalom Bond Honoree
Cong. Beth Shalom will
pay tribute to its spiritual
leader on the occasion of his
10th anniversary at the
Oak Park synagogue.
A Beth Shalom Israel
Bond tribute dinner will
honor Rabbi David A. Nel-
son 6:30 p.m. Aug. 16 in the
synagogue's social hall.
Rabbi Nelson will be pre-
sented with an award "in
appreciation of his leader-
ship on behalf of his congre-
gation and the cause of Is-
rael."
Dinner co-chairmen are
Harvey Farber and Howard
apper. A tribute commit-
tee is now in formation.
Rabbi Nelson was born
in Bridgeport, Conn. He
earned a BA in history at
Brandeis University,
spending his junior year
at Hebrew University in
Jerusalem. He graduated
from the Jewish Theolog-
ical Seminary in New
York in 1965 and was or-

dained in 1967.
He did post graduate
studies at the Academy of
Parish Clergy and partici-
pated ip the Achievement
Motivation Program and
the State of Michigan Con-
ference on Substance
Abuse.
Upon his rabbinical ordi-
nation, he accepted the posi-
tion of assistant rabbi, As-
sociacao Religiosa Israelita,
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,
where his duties included
weekly sermons in Por-
tuguese.
In 1969 he became associ-
ate rabbi at Chizuk Amuno
in Baltimore, Md.
He has been rabbi of
Cong. Beth Shalom since
1972.
Rabbi Nelson has in-
volved himself in many
communal and hunanita-
rian causes, including

structor at the school;
chairman, Zionist Organ-
ization of America schol-
arship committee in Detroit
and chaplain for the South-,
field Police Department.

ropolitan Detroit, the
