Urgency of American Jewish Solidarity
With Israel Emphasized to Bring Out Truth

American Jewry's sol-
idarity with Israel has be-
come a mandatory need in
the present critical period,
and its effect is urgent as
means of exposing the libel-
ous and bringing truth to
public opinion, Dr. Michael
Bar-Zohar, declared here in
a brief visit after fulfilling
an assignment of military
duty with the Israel Defense
Forces in Lebanon.
Dr. Bar-Zohar, a Labor
Alignment member of the
Israel Knesset, stated dur-
ing his two-day visit in De-
troit that American Jews,
as well as Jews in the en-
tire Diaspora, must make it
a point to visit Israel, to
strengthen the association
with Israel, so that Israelis
will know that world Jewry
is with them in body as well
as in spirit in a time of
stress.
Dr. Bar-Zohar, who un-
dertook a two-week . as-
signment in this country in
the interest of tourism to Is-
rael,• pointed out, as a
member of the opposition to
the Likud government, that
the parties in Israel — all

are united in the task of en-
ding the PLO threat to their
country; that the need is to
re-emphasize the mag-
netism in Israel's tourism
because of the safety in the
land, because of the beauty
of the incomparable vaca-
tion spots.
More important, he de-
clared, is the need for Is-
raelis to see fellow Jews,
to fraternize with them,
to assure the solidarity
that is so urgent for a
people in need of encour-
agement at a time when
so many libels are
spreading about them.
Reporting on his tour of
duty in Lebanon, Dr. Bar-
Zohar said that the humane
spirit persists among Is-
raelis, the military and the
civilian, that the charges of
brutalities leveled at them
are so outrageous that they
must not be permitted to
react as menacingly as Is-
rael's enemies plot.
Dr. Bar-Zohar judged the
future realistically, stating

that the end of the PLO in
the present conflict will not
end the controversies.
Nevertheless, he said, the
Judea-Samaria disputes
may yet be resolved in great
measure, the hope still
being entertained that King
Hussein of Jordan will
realize the benefits to be de-
rived from friendly,
neighborly relations.
"Come to Israel, accept
our embraces, we need the
tourist, the cooperative
spirit of American Jewry,"
Dr. Bar-Zohar said. "We
need partners in presenting
the truth to the world. We
need solidarity with the
Diaspora, and we are de-
pendent upon it for our sec-
urity and for the dignity of
the Jewish people."
The Israeli MK views the
demonstrations for peace in
Israel with "pragmatism."
"We are a democracy," he
said, "with freedom to
speak, and there is a great
desire, marked by unanim-
ity, for peace and for an end
to this war, and to all wars.
The very demonstrators
will not abstain from serv-
ing in the armed forces.
They may prefer not to go to
the front, but they are part
of the nation's struggles to
end all threats. That's our
pride: we are a democracy."
Dr. Bar-Zohar was
born in Sophia, Bulgaria
in 1938. He studied at
Hebrew University in
Jerusalem, Tel Aviv Uni-
versity and The Sor-
bonne. He holds a PhD in
political science.
Dr. Bar-Zohar served in
military intelligence and
the paratroopers. He was
spokesman for the Ministry
of Defense and during the
Six-Day War served as

press secretary for Moshe
Dayan.
Dr. Bar-Zohar is the au-
thor of several books on
political science including
"Bridge Over the Mediter-
ranean," "The Longest
Month," "The Paratroopers
Book," and "Ben-Gurion."
He is also known for his

50 Arrested
at Bir Zeit U.
Demonstration

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Police arrested 50 Palesti-
nian students on the West
Bank last week when they
staged a rally to protest the
closing of the Bir Zeit Uni-
versity.
Israeli authorities cloSed
the institution in early July
for three months after stu-
dents staged violent demon-
strations against Israel's
military actions in Leba-
non.
During the rally an Is-
raeli soldier was injured
when Arab youths stoned
an army patrol.
Meanwhile, another West
Bank mayor was dismissed
from his post last week, the
eighth such dismissal since
March. An Israeli spokes-
man announced that Rashid
Hijazi of Dir Dibwan was
replaced by three Arab offi-
cials because he had "staged
a work slowdown in the
municipality for the past
month and a half."

Enthusiasm is the
greatest asset in the world.
It beats money and power
and influence.
