Aliya Interest Reported Up

NEW YORK — Israel's
"Peace for Galilee" military
action in Lebanon may be
causing identity problems
for some of North American
Jewry, but for others it has

become a call to personal ac-
tion.
According to Moshe
Schechter, director of the Is-
rael Aliya Center of North
America, "more files have
been opened by families and
individuals who wish to
move to Israel during the
past 30 days than any other
single 30-day period in the
past five years."

Mitterrand Refuses to Meet
the PLO's Farouk Kaddoumi

PARIS (JTA) — Presi-
dent Francois Mitterrand
last week turned down a re-
quest by a Palestine Libera-
tion Organization official
for an audience. The presi-
dent avoided meeting with
Farouk Kaddoumi, head of
the PLO's political depart-
ment, by claiming that he
had no time because he was
leaving for Budapest.
Kaddoumi arrived in
Paris as a member of an
Arab League delegation
which included the foreign
ministers of Kuwait and
Algeria. The delegation is
touring the capitals of all
the countries that are per-
manent members of the Un-
ited Nations Security Coun-
cil. The group was
scheduled to visit London
and then possibly will go to
Washington.

UJA Appointee

NEW YORK — Vicki
Agron of Denver, Colo., has
been named director of the
executive office of the
executive vice chairman of
the United Jewish Appeal.
Agron served as Chair-
man of the United Jewish
Appeal Young Women's
Leadership Cabinet during
the 1982 Campaign. ' She
coordinated the voluntary
efforts of 170 young women
throughout the United
States in UJA/community
campaigns, established new
women's career groups and
spoke in major American
communities on fundrais-
ing, leadership develop-
ment, solicitor training and
Jewish identity.
She has served as a
member of the Executive
Committees of the Council
of Jewish Federations Wo-
men's Division and the Al-
lied Jewish Federation of
Denver. She was a delegate
to the Jewish Agency's
General Assembly in
Jerusalem in 1979 and has
been a three-time particip-
ant in UJA Women's Divi-
sion Missions to Israel.

TAU Inaugurates
Economics Chair

TEL AVIV — The Mario
Henrique Simonsen Chair
of Public Finance was inau-
gurated recently at Tel Aviv
University.
The new chair, named in
honor of the former Brazi-
lian Finance Minister
Mario Henrique Simonsen,
will focus on enhancing re-
search in the field of
economics and seeking solu-
tions to Israel's economic
problems, while providing
new ideas for the develop-
ment of public finance.

Miss Manners

JERUSALEM (JNI) —
An 11-year-old Israeli
schoolgirl temporarily in
Johannesburg recently
caused quite a stir. Her new
classmates explained that
all pupils must stand when
an adult enters the room, so
Deena rose when the next
adult entered. She was the
only one standing for the
black bus driver.

with ease, we must learn
—Johnson

Mitterrand's refusal to
meet with Kaddoumi is not
unprecedented. No PLO
leader has yet been received
at the Elysee Palace al-
though PLO officials regu-
larly confer with the French
foreign minister and other
top officials.
Kaddoumi met last week
with Foreign Minister
Claude Cheysson.
