Books of Jewish Interest Made
Available in Large Type by JWB
NEW YORK — "Large -
Type Books of Jewish In-
terest" has just been pub-
lished by the JWB Jewish
Book Council to help visu-
ally impaired persons be-
come better acquainted
with their Jewish heritage.
Dr. Robert Gordis, presi-
dent of the JWB Book Coun-
cil, announced the publica-
tion of the new 19-page an-
notated bibliography of
works of both fiction and
non-fiction.
"Approximately 14 per-
cent of the Jewish popula-
tion is over the age of 65,"
Dr. Gordis said. "Many of
these people are visually
impaired. These and others
whose eyesight is di-
minished require reading
material in large type."
Compiled by Helene L.
Tuchman, the publica-
tion describes 22 books of
fiction, 11 religious
works, and 12 works of
non-fiction.
Poll: Americans
Support Drive
Into Lebanon
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The stated intentions of Is-
rael's military invasion into
Lebanon have the over-
whelming support of
American public opinion,
according to the latest Har-
ris Poll.
By a majority of 76 to 14,
Americans supported the
stated objectives of the Is-
raeli military action in
Lebanon: "To have all non-
Lebanese military powers
— Israel, Syria, and the
PLO — leave that country
and allow the Lebanese to
rule themselves and to con-
trol their own country
militarily," the poll said.
However, the majority of
Americans — 54-41 percent
— oppose sending U.S.
troops to Lebanon to act as
part of a peacekeeping force
in south Lebanon in the
25-mile buffer zone the Is-
raelis want in order to pre-
vent the Palestine Libera-
tion Organization from
launching rocket and artil-
lery assaults on northern
Israeli settlements..
- A 49-48 percent plural-
ity of men favors sending
U.S. troops, but women
oppose U.S. participation -
in any peacekeeping
force in Lebanon by 61-33
percent.
According to the survey,
American public opinion
toward Israel continued to
remain high. American
public opinion is 79 percent
positive- and 13 percent
negative in its feelings
about Israel, up slightly
from 75 to 17 percent last
January, the poll said.
The poll found favorable
American opinion toward
moderate Arab states, as
Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and
Jordan, while having nega-
tive feelings toward Syria,
Libya and Iraq. Regarding
the PLO, 73 percent con-
sider them as either "not
friendly" or "an enemy" of
the United States.
DR. ROBERT GORDIS
The introduction, pre-
pared by Dr. Gordis _and
Council Director Ruth S.
Frank, states:
"There are virtually no
large-type books for the
Jewish child nor are there
sufficient large-type books
for the Jewish adult.
"There is also no English
translation of the Masoretic
text of the Bible available in
large type. It is, therefore,
our hope that this anno-
tated bibliography will pro-
vide the impetus for the
publication of more large-
type books and materials
that can help fill the needs
