Camp David Decision Is Must
for Peace—Candidate Mahaffey

Councilwoman Maryann
Mahaffey, candidate for the
Democratic nomination for
Congress in the 17th Dis-
trict, declared herself obli-
gated, if elected, in dealing
with the Middle East crises,
to treat the Camp David de-
cisions as a "must" in con-
fronting the needs.
She indicated to The
Jewish News that in her
commitment to U.S. policies
to protect Israel and to as-
sure the Jewish state's
existence, she opposed the
AWACS sale to Saudi
Arabia and continues her
efforts on that basis.
Because some questions
have been raised regarding
the issue with reference to
her earlier declarations and
actions, Councilwoman
Mahaffey presented this
statement to The Jewish
News:
"I have supported and
fought for the right of the
Jewish people to inde-
pendence and self deter-
mination since the ear-
liest days of the struggles
against British im-
perialism. I have contin-
ued to make known, pri-:
vately and publicly, my
concern for the security,
safety and well being of
Israel and for the right of
the Jewish nation to exist
without threat of attack
and invasion.
"I have visited Israel and
a kibutz and share in the
joys, as well as the tribula-
tions, of a productive and
progressive new society.
"The Palestine Libera-
tion Organization's refusal
to acknowledge the state of
Israel's right to exist is
wrong. It is a formidable ob-
stacle to negotiations. My
primary concern in the
Mideast is for peace and jus-
tice for all peoples.
"As a professional social
worker, I am especially sen-
sitive to the protection and
sanctity of the basic human
rights to which all peoples
are entitled. I hope for an
end to terrorism, a reduc-
tion of international arm
sales, and a negotiated, firm
settlement which will
ensure peaceful co-
existence of all peoples in
this troubled part of the
world.
"My personal convic-
tions are rooted deeply in
the Judeo - Christian
traditions of compassion,
fairness and justice. I re-
sent and reject any and
all appeals to ethnic or
religious prejudice and
the dissemination of
rumors and inferences
which promote those
prejudices.
"I believe in the demo-
cratic process which
encourages open and free
discussion, with tolerance
for all political views and
opinions, including those of
doubters and dissenters,
and I maintain steadfastly

Despair is the damp of
hell, as joy is the serenity of
heaven.

Councilwoman Mahaf-
fey's position in support of
Israel was clarified earlier,
especially in a lengthy let-
ter published in the Sept.
25, 1980, issue of The
Jewish News.
The district in which she
is a candidate may prove to
have the most seriously con-
tested battle for the Demo-
cratic nomination for Con-
gress. In the race are Sander
Levin, Douglas Ross and a
nun, Sister Agnes Mary
Mansour, president of
Mercy College.
