Carl Levin and Donald Riegle, State Rep. Joe Forbes questioned the wis- dom of the appointment of George Shultz as Secretary of State. "I believe that this nomi- nation raises two questions which I hope will be ad- dressed during the confir- mation process. "First of all, how many former employees of a single giant corporation should have cabinet and sub- cabinet level jobs in a single national administration at the same time? "Exactly how many people are there already in this government with previous experience in the Bechtel Corp.? Are they all in positions which bear on foreign policy decision making? Is this a wise public pol- icy? "Secondly, what effects will this nomination have on future relations between the United States and the state of Israel? There is a great deal of speculation in the media as to whether or not this nomination is in- tended to signal a change of policy. Is this true? "The essential relations between our two countries are a matter of historical commitments by many presidents of both parties and by many congresses on behalf of the American people. A shift in that policy should not be undertaken by indirection, but in full light of day, with public dis- - cussions and a full aware- ness of the present and fu- ture implications for both our country and for Israel. Is that somehow involved here? We deserve to know. "Because I believe that these are both important questions which deserve to be fully explored, I am ask- ing you to raise them during the process of the confirma- tion hearings and debate which will soon take place. I believe that having these questions and the answers on record will be a service to the American people." Births July 1— To Mr. and Mrs: Barry R.
