Detroiter Describes Ruin Wrought by PLO Shelling David Baruch, a De- troiter in Israel, at one of the areas endangered by PLO attack — Maalot — writing to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Abe Medow, de- scribed the horrors that con- fronted the area before Is- rael drove the enemies from the border. In a letter dated June 8, Baruch tells of one particu- lar day's experiences: "After work, we started home from the forests when we saw a lot of smoke com- ing from one of the nearby kibutzim. We all (about 20 of us) got fire fighting equipment and went there immediately. Forests were afire and fields were being totally destroyed. "In our stubborn Jewish manner we all jumped into the fire and began putting it out. It was scary, yet we all knew we had a job to do. In the end, we were able to save about half of the fields and almost half of the forests surrounding them. "It was a miracle that we were there to help, for there was no one else but us. The fields and forests and kibutz might have been de- molished." The letter concludes with a comment on the justifica- tion of Israel's actions as a preventative of the menac- ing situation when the PLO is on Israel's borders.
