Work has begun on a re-
search project which will re-
sult in the publication of a
multi-volume reference tool
devoted to the history of
genocide. This work will be
carried out by a a team of
researchers as part of a
permanent unit affiliated
with the new Holocaust
Memorial Center.
Headed by Dr. Michael
Kerestesi, Wayne State
University professor, the
research unit will develop
programs and projects to
implement the cultural
mission of the center.

The history of genocide
research project intends to
establish an encyclopedic
record of major genocidal
events throughout the his-
tory of the world. A separate
unit of the work is devoted
to the crimes against the
Jewish people from biblical
times through the
Holocaust. A bibliography
of sources also will be com-
piled.
In studying the histori-
cal record, Dr. Kerestesi
and his research team
will try to identify not
only the perpetrators of
the crimes but also those
individuals in history
who attempted to save or
assist the persecuted
Jews.
The result of this research
will be incorporated in two
separate segments of the
work, one entitled "Monu-
ment to the Righteous," and
the other tentatively called
"Book of Infamy." Maps and
a variety of lists and syn-
chronistic tables will com-
plement the encyclopedia
section.
Assisting Dr. Kerestesi
are: Celia Goodman, Estelle
Burke, Rebeccah Kollman,
Lillian Gold, Evelyn Paxton
and Mimi Robbins.
Prof. Kerestesi holds a
PhD degree in library sci-
ence from the University of
Michigan and an advanced
degree in history. He has
taught at WSU since 1973.
