said. He said Israeli Jews

"in overwhelming numbers
have flocked to these organ-

Dr. Cohen said that

Phalangist Ally
to Lead Lebanon?

WASHINGTON
Newsweek magazine re-
ported this week that Is-
rael's drive against the
Palestine Liberation
Organization terrorists
may lead to the presidency
of Lebanon for one of Israel's
Phalangist allies.
Bashir Gemayel, 35, is
running for the presidency
in the elections scheduled
for the end of July.
Newsweek claims that
Gemayel is trying to woo
Syrian and PLO support
and has been keeping his
distance from the Israelis
in recent weeks.
Traditionally, the
presidency of Lebanon goes
to a Maronite Christian.
Gemayel's major opposition
is Raymond Edde, a liberal
Maronite who has been in
exile since 1976 when the
Phalangists asked the Sy-
rians for help in their war
against the Palestinians
and leftist Muslims.

rial display of the history
and culture of Indian Jewry.
Initially planned for
March 1982, the project was
postponed for lack of funds.
The congregation Gate of
Mercy synagogue here cele-
brated its 185th anniver-
sary last December. The
Bene-Israel number about
7,000 out of a huge popula-
tion of 700 million in India.
Apart from the history of
the synagogue the book and
display will contain ac-
counts of cultural, social
and religious contributions
to India by its ancient
Jewish community.
The proposed pictorial
exhibition will feature
photographs of men and
women in their native In-
dian costumes and photo-
graphs of most of the
synagogues in India and one
in Pakistan built by Indian
Jews.

Dr. David Gordis, vice-
president of the University
of Judaism in Los Angeles,
the Jewish Theological
Seminary's West Coast af-
filiate, has been named
executive director of the
new foundation. Rabbi Mor-
ton Leifman, seminary
assistant chancellor, has
been named executive sec-
retary.
A Seminary spokesman
said the foundation office
will be located temporarily
in Los Angeles, pending
choice of a permanent site.
She also said that 101
Conservative rabbis have

made aliya of whom 15 are
retired. She said the other
86 rabbis were active as
pulpit rabbis, camp coun-
selors, teachers and ad-
ministrators.
Gordis said he hoped
that "we shall soon be
training native Israelis
for the rabbinate, using
as our model the same
high standards of schol-'
arship and the same
dedication to authentic
interpretation of Jewish
tradition which have al-
ways characterized both
the New York seminary
and its West Coast af-
filiate."
He said another project
with a "high priority" in the
foundation program is es-
tablishment of a kibutz
"with a Conservative reli-
gious orientation" which
would provide "an educa-
tional center serving Con-
servative Jews in Israel and
visitors from the Diaspora."
