A PLEA
TO HELP FREE
AN AMERICAN JEW
IN THE
SOVIET UNION

Dear Friends,

Four years ago a handful of legislators joined me in a campaign to free Dina
Rifkin and her family from the Soviet Union. After a letter writing campaign in which
hundreds of people joined to exert pressure on the State Department and the Soviet
Union, we were successful. Dina Rifkin and her children live in Oak Park today.

At the request of the Detroit Committee for Soviet Jewry, Mayor Coleman
Young, Congressmen Brodhead and Broomfield, and State Senator William Seder-
burg joined me last year in another campaign: to free Abe Stolar and his family from
the Soviet Union. The response from Legislators and Congressmen has been
overwhelming.

Abe Stolar is an American born in Chicago. He and his family, after living in the
Soviet Union, have been denied the right to leave the country since 1975. The Soviet
authorities have refused to honor the Stolar's American passports.

.

It is now time to expand our campaign and to ask others to join with the
impressive list of public officials who already support the Michigan Committee to
Free the Stolar Family. Our efforts to bring public pressure to bear on the State
Department and the Soviet Union worked in freeing the Rifkins. I am confident that
such efforts again will free the Stolar family. I invite and encourage you to join our
committee by writing to one or all of the addresses listed below.

With best wishes,

SENATOR DOUG ROSS
