Tours of Israel
Novel Portrays Danes During Holocaust
By ALLEN A. WARSEN
NEW YORK — The
Zionist Organization of
America's (ZOA) Masada
Israel Summer Program
will have a record enroll-
. ment in six summer pro-
grams this year.
• Some 300 participants
age 13-23 are taking advan-
tage of these six-week edu-
cational tours of Israel. This
represents 100 additional
applications to the program
as compared to 1981.
"The situation in Scan-
dinavia requires the mak-
ing of all preparations for
the occupation of Denmark
and Norway by a part of the
German armed forces. In
view of our military and
political power in compari-
son with that of the Scan-
dinavian states, the force to
be employed will be kept as
small as possible. The num-
erical weakness will be bal-
anced by daring actions and

surprise of execution."
The above quoted secret
directive that Hitler issued
to the German armed forces
was clandestinely acquired
for the Danish Special In-
telligence Department by
Valdemar Larsen, a major
hero in John Goldsmith's
novel, "Exodus 43" (Cow-
ard, McCann and Geoghe-
gan).
Curiously, despite the
unequivocal evidence of
Hitler's intentions, King
Christian, the military, the
politicians, the press and
even the Jews were con-
vinced that the Nazis would
respect Denmark's neutral-
ity. Only the aged Reuben
Abrahamsen and his son,
Abel, foresaw the German
invasion of their countr?
and its aftermath.
It is important to stress,
that unlike King Chris-
tian, who advocates a
modus vivendi with the
occupiers, King Haakon
of Norway rallies his
armed forces and heroi-
cally resists the
Wehrmacht's blitzkrieg.
Though beaten by the
enemy, King Haakon pre-
fers exile to dishonorable
surrender.

A major objective of the
Resistance is to publish un-
derground newspapers to
counter the Danish Nazi
Party press and to fight
German censorship. One of
the illegal newssheets is
Abel's "The Truth." It gives
Abel a feeling of satisfaction
that he is contributing
something toward the Re-
sistance.
A co-conspirator is his
niece Rose, who organizes
the publication's distribu-
tion, a task that "gave a
purpose to life."
After a number of inci-
dents, the majority of the
Jewish people realize the
danger confronting them
and hide in the homes of
their friendly neighbors.
But they cannot remain in
hiding for very long, as the
Danish collaborators report
to the SS.
More than 7,000 Jews
are taken to secret, un-
patrolled places on the
coast of the Kattegat and
thence shipped on hun-
dreds of boats to Sweden.
Nevertheless, the Ges-
tapo did apprehend some
Jews, mostly old women,
cripples and children and
put them in a hastily-
organized concentration
camps that it called "the
ghetto." Among the impris-
oned is Rosa who is seized
while rescuing Jews.
As soon as the war is over,
Rosa and her husband Via-
demar return to their home
from Auschwitz where for
two years they suffered
hunger, physical, moral and
mental humiliation and
were unaware of each
other's presence. At the
same time the Danish Jews
return to their homes from
Swedish exile.
The novel "Exodus 43"
brings the history of Danish
Jewry during World War II
alive in all its complexities.
Though it is a work of fic-
tion, "Exodus 43" reads like
a Holocaust memoir written
by a survivor.
The author, John
Goldsmith, born in 1947 in
London, has published two
novels and numerous books
for children.

She wants to quit
To My People
By PHILIP GOREN
You are my hope
My dream for a bright, joy-
ful everlasting future.
My dreams and hope at pre-
sent
Will sustain my people
For generations to come.
The sea, the deserts,
And the stony mountains of
Israel
Kindle my inner soul
Like in a rainbow's glow.
Since my early youth
I carry that flame
With a glorious height
So the People of the world
Will understand and glorify
The Holiness of our Creator
With a vision
Which is sublime
To the human comprehen-
sion.
Deep in my spirit
Kindles a lasting flame
Which nourishes my physi-
cal body.
I stretch the warmth of my
heart to humanity.
Together, together, together
Let us wipe our tears
Which will consequently
Bring joy for all humanity
In Which God will also re-
joice.

Do you?
That's the only point we want to make here. You
know all the reasons for quitting. You read and
hear them over and over, day in, day out. They're
cast in bronze in your head and your heart. Rote is
wonderful. Too bad it can't handle guilt. Or one's
sense of responsibility. Or intelligence.
You have to want to quit when you go to our
Centers for help. We know how to help you if you
want to accomplish that. Our aversion therapy
techniques have been effective for thousands of
former smokers who did not swap one bad habit
for another. We have techniques for weight control
and withdrawal symptoms, too.
Think about it again. Look at the photo again.
Those ashtrays might do something to you. Empty
your ashtrays. Give us a call. After five days with
us you won't need them anymore.
