Six-Day War Was a Battle of Bureaucracy
in Argentina for 'Soldier' Jacobo Timerman

Jacobo Timerman, the
Argentine Jew who settled
in Israel after being re-
leased from Argentinian
prisons where he said he
was tortured for being a
Zionist, has since then
created bitterness by accus-
ing Israel of being a Fascist

His portrayal of himself,
in his book, "Prisoner With-
out a Name, Cell Without a
Number" (Knopf) has his
Zionist role confirmed in
"Among Lions" by J. Robert
Moskin (Arbor House).
Listing Timerman among
concerned Jews who desired
to join the armed forces in
defense of Israel, Moskin re-
cords the following:
"Jacobo Timerman,
the editor of an Argentine
weekly newsmagazine,
tells his story: 'When the'
Six-Day War started, I
presented myself to the
Israeli Embassy in
Buenos Aires and asked
to go to the war. I was
then 44 and had three
children.

JACOBO TIMERMAN

said 'Relax, you are
meshuga, crazy.' I said, 'I
want to go to the war be-
cause I missed the '48 war,
so this war is my war and I
want to go and fight.' He
said he would arrange my
flight and prepare my pap-
ers.
" 'It was a tragedy at
home. I had made my will
with the lawyer, and my
children were crying that
their father is going to the
war. My wife, Risha, said,
' 'But you have three chil-
dren.' I said, 'This is a
spiritual problem; I must be
in that war.'
" 'So I went to the police
department to ask for a re-
newal of my passport. In
Argentina, you must have it
validated every six months.
They said. 'We cannot give
you a new passport because

News of Israel
on Short Wave

Editor, The Jewish News:
Truth is being sacrificed
and people are misled by the
Lebanese situation.
I urge all to listen to the
short wave Israel broad-
casts, 6:30 p.m. in English, 7
p.m. in Yiddish. It will be a
way of arriving at the truth
and guiding people not to be
misled by false propaganda.
I'll be happy to advise
whoever needs more infor-
mation on securing short
wave radios and on other
broadcasts.

School Budget

NEW YORK (JTA) —
The Fund for Jewish Educa-
tion, which distributes
grants to Jewish schools
and to benefit career Jewish
educators in the Greater
New York area, has an-
nounced a budget for fiscal
1982-1983 of $4.5 million,
an increase of $750,000 over
the budget for 1981-1982.

the mayor of Buenos Aires
is suing you over one of your
articles denouncing that he
made some arrangement
with the taxi drivers. You
need permission of the judge
who is in charge.'
" `It was late to go to the
judge, so the second day I
went to the judge. He
asked, `What if you are
killed?' I said, `If I am kil-
led it is my problem.' But
the judge said. 'If you lose
the case and your are kil-
led, who is going to pay
the mayor his indemnifi-
cation?' He said, `If you
deposit the maximum
amount of money in the
name of this court, I can
give you permission. If
you do not lose the case
and you are killed, your
widow will get back the
money.'
" 'So I must go to the bank.
The bank was closed. The
third day of the war I went
to the bank and deposited
the money, about $1,000
and went back to the judge.
The judge was closed. So the
fourth day of the war I went
back to the judge and he
gave me the permission. I
went to the police and they
were closed.
" 'The fifth day of the war
I went to the police. They
gave me the passport, and I
went to the Israeli Embassy
and they said, 'Come back
tomorrow and we will have
everything arranged now
that you have the passport.'
" The sixth day the war
was finished. So it was six
days of applications. For six
days I fought the war with
applications.' "
