Vienna Transit Center for Emigres Shut,
High Cost of Rent Blamed for Closing

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The World Zionist Execu-
tive announced that it was
shutting down the Jewish
Agency's immigrant transit
center in Vienna "for
budgetary reasons."
Rafael Kotlowitz, head of
the agency's immigration
and absorption department,
said there was no justifica-
tion to pay high rent for the
facility at a time when few
Jews are leaving the Soviet
Union and even fewer are
continuing on to Israel.
He said that of the 169
Jews who reached Vienna
from the USSR this month,
only 48 came to Israel.

From now on, the
Jewish Agency will
transfer immigrants to
Israel on the day of their
arrival in Vienna, or, at
most a day or two later.
Immigrants who want to
re-unite with first degree
relatives in countries
other than Israel, will be
referred to the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee for
assistance.

In Washington, the Se-
nate passed without objec-
tion a resolution calling for
the emigration from the
Soviet Union of Chicagoan
Abe Stolyar and his family,

Tourists to USSR
Are Briefed on
Meeting Jews

The Detroit Soviet Jewry
Committee of the Jewish
Community Council an-
nounced that the DSJC will
provide briefings for per-
sons travelling to the Soviet
Union on how to go about
visiting with Jewish refus-
niks during their stays in
the USSR.
Anyone planning a trip to
the Soviet Union is re-
quested to contact Beverly
Yost at the Jewish Commu-
nity Council, 962-1880, for

mission to leave since June
17, 1975.
The resolution, which
was co-sponsored by Sen.
Charles H. Percy (R-I11.)
and 20 other Senators, will
be transmitted now to the
Soviet government.
"Abe Stolyar was born in
Chicago and is an American
citizen. It is long past time
for his freedom," Percy said.
Sen. Percy has made private
representations to Soviet of-
ficials in Washington and in
the USSR since 1975 and
has repeatedly urged ad-
ministration officials to

press the case with the
Soviets.

In a related develop-
ment, the Student Strug-
gle for Soviet Jewry has
begun a new petition
campaign, "No Grain
Sales to the Soviets."

It calls for the Kremlin to
open the now almost-shut
gates of Jewish emigration
and to cease the current
KGB campaign against the
unofficial Jewish self-
identity movement in Rus-
sia before a new grain ac-
cord with the Soviets is
signed.
