Leonard Borman, left, seated, was the honoree at
Wednesday's dinner celebrating the 53rd anniversary
of the Council of Orthodox Rabbii. Pictured with

guest speaker; and Rabbi Leizer Levin. In top row,

terror he felt when the Is-
raelis simulated ambushes
as part of their training
exercises, and said that it
led him to act on behalf of
Israel.
On the topic of Israel's
bombing of the nuclear
reactor in Iraq, the Senator
said "Israel did her
neighbors a favor." He said
Syria and the surrounding
Arab nations were con-
cerned over the fact that
Iraq built a reactor for a
bomb, rather than for re-
search or electricity.
He said he found the
"lack of vehement 'Arab
response to the bombing
of the reactor curious."
In his discussion on nu-
clear armament, Packwood
said that France has made
selling nuclear information
"a commercial venture.
France is the most advanced
nuclear country in the
world."
He said he feared that
France might sell to Libya,
Uganda and Syria. He
added, "Israel protected us
from the day when a mad-
man gets ahold of the
bomb."
Packwood described Is-
rael Prime Minister
Menahem Begin's meeting
at the Senate Wednesday,
when many Senators
charged him with using ex-
cessive force in Lebanon. He
said that Begin pointed out
instances in U.S. history
and on the current world
scene that were far worse
than what Israel had done.
"The logic of what he (Be-
gin) says is beyond re-
proach."
The rabbis' dinner also
was the occasion to honor
the memory of Rabbi
Joshua Sperka and to pay
tribute to Sam Hechtman,
who recited the Birkat, and
Mrs. Hechtman whe were
celebrating their 52nd an-
niversary.
Cantor Chaim Najman of
Cong. Shaarey Zedek sang
the anthems, and Dr. Morey
Firestone chanted Hamotzi.
Edward Levy, Jr., intro-
duced the guest speaker.
