Danny Raskin's

iThe Best o f Everything

SELDOM BEFORE
have the lake areas been
literally flooded with
taurants . . . Some are
good, some are bad and
many indifferent . . . Time
was when, years back,
about the only thing you
could get were hamburgers
and Coney Island hot dogs
. . . Not so today as old-
timers bemoan the fact that
they didn't have many
places to go in yesteryears.
Emphasis around the
lakes is mainly on the
medium- and lower-priced
family retaurant . .
where moms and dads can
bring the kids, eat heartily,
and get away well within
what a short budget would
allow . . . Or a guy and gal
can eat in relaxed comfort
with extra cash left over for
other recreation.
This is why a place like
Benji's North has become so
popular . . . It is a place for
everyone . . . Benji
Pearlman, the same Benji
Palmer Dance Studio head
of many years back, became
a Culinary Arts Institute
attendee and cooking
teacher . . . opening what
was formerly a Nugget, in
October 1981, with 101 sea-
ting . . . on Orchard Lake
Rd. past Keego Harbor, be-
tween Cass Lake Rd. and
Middlebelt (one mile from
Telegraph.)
In July, Benji's will be-
come a low-priced sea-
food house, with about
eight fish entrees . . .
along with his regular
family dining menu . . .
steaks, ribs, chicken, etc.
Benji's North is more
than just a Sunday drive
. . . it is an everyday ex-
perience . . . as he takes a
chefs approach to family
dining instead of a bunch of
stuff slapped together and
pushed under the noses of
hungry parental throngs.
He even does sculpturing
. . . at the restaurant or for
outside parties . . . making
objects from vegetables and
fruits . . . They make excel-
lent centerpieces for parties
. . . Turkeys and donkeys
made from watermelons
penguins from
eggplant . . . palm trees
from carrots, green peppers
and potatoes, animals from
carrots . . . etc.
Benji makes his own
desserts . . . the rice
pudding is among the
best . . . loaded with
eggs, raisins and nutmeg
. . . creamy, yet with the
solid consistency of a
good bread pudding.
His Que Pasa Beef
Nachos are a specialty favo-
rite . . . corn tortillas
covered with beef, diced
vegetables and three
- _ cheeses.
You won't find too many
places with better rat-
tatouille, fresh cooked veg-
etables ... . We had char-
broiled halibut, ribs and
teriyaki steak . . . Benji's
as a family restaurant is
gaining wide note.
One customer with his
family at another table said
a lot by exclaiming, "Who

would believe a place like
this could put out such good
food at these prices?"
GAEL GREENE has
always loved good cooking
and dining in fancy restau-
rants . . . since she was a
youngster working in her
dad's store . . . Nat
Greene's on Livernois and
Seven Mile . . . For the last
13 years, the daughter of
Saralee Greene and the labia
Nat Greene has been res-
taurant critic for New York
Magazine.
She is an author, too . . .
having written "Blue Skies,
No Candy" in 1976 . . . and
now out with her latest,
"Doctor Love" (St. Martin's
Press) . . . about a great
lover who's never been in
love . . . Although she says
it is somewhat along her
own life, the lead character,
Barney Kincaid, is far from
Gael's idea of a gourmet
. He is a junk food addict
. . . doctor of emergency
medicine . .". in his 40s,
single again and making
the most of it sexually.
NEWEST SENSATION
to open in the gourmet
carry-out field is Broadway
Specialties . . . in the
Broadway Market,
Middlebelt and 14 Mile Rd.
The space is belying in
size . . . as MacKinnon's
Restaurant in Northfield
and Blakeney's Ranch
House on Grand River seem
to have gotten together in
what is perhaps the most
unusual carry-out to be
found anywhere . . .
There's plenty of room in
back for the goodies pre-
pared by Bob and Dick
Blakeney, Tom MacKinnon
and Greg Goodman.
Ever have duck streudel
. . or crab streudel? . .
The fellows make both . .
as well as delicious gallen-
tines . . . chicken breast
layered with veal . . . or
chicken breast layered with
an inside of crab and Dover
sole . . . They also make
their own mellow
cheesecake which is fast be-
coming a big favorite.
In fact, there is nothing
they won't make! . . .
Someone asked for
roasted lion and was told
they could even have
hippopotomus or what-
ever.
On display are beef Wel-
lington, the streudels and
gallentines . . . bought by
the slice or full piece . . .
pate, quiches . . . and
whatever gourmet food
ideas the gents or customers
come up with.
Their food is a sensation
at dinner parties.
For the wild game
enthusiast . . . this is a typ-
ical dinner at $25 per person
. . . Appetizer: crab and
water pasta . . . Salad:
French Jol Ann vegetables
in a crepe shell with port
wine and curry sauce dres-
sing . . . Fish entree:
smoked mahi mahi . . .
Meat entree: hippopotomus
steak with red and green
pepper corn sauce . . . and
