The land of Israel provides an artistic labora- tory in which all types of cultural expression can emerge. There is a sym- phony of interaction be- tween the ancient and the modern, between the reli- gious and the secular; and Jews everywhere benefit from this new flowering of Jewish creativity. In the photograph accom- panying this article there is to be found a beauty and ex- citement all of its own. Standing tall and erect is a modern Hanuka menora in silver. Four branches on either side, each one stem- ming from the same source, build up to a peak crowned by the lone holder for the shamas — the candle which lights all the others. This menora contrasts with a seven-branched one to its right. In its tooling this menora sympolizes the one which stood in the Tem- ple of old. That menora form is found in every synagogue which is in our tradition a mikdash me'at — a minia- ture temple. A coin of the Second Temple Period is enlarged in size and car- ries on it ancient Hebrew script and a cluster of pomegranates, the royal fruit. This coin is placed in context when seen with a clay oil lamp of - that same era. The coin expresses independence even amidst servitude Jewish Leaders in Lebanon BEAUFORT CASTLE, Lebanon (JTA) — "It is the duty and privilege of the Jewish people worldwide to share with Israel the tre- mendous economic burden created by the war in Leba- non. This is the message which must emerge from our meetings here." With those words of exhortation Jewish Agency and World Zionist Organ- ization Executive chairman Leon Dulzin introduced the members of the Jewish Agency Board of Governors to sites of the recent Israeli military action in Lebanon. Standing on the ramparts of this ancient Crusader for- tress, Jewish leaders from the United States, Europe and South America were told of the military threat posed to Israel's northern settlement by Palestine Liberation Organization ar- tillery and rockets concen- trated here before Israeli forces captured this com- manding spot. Escorted by army officers, Abu Eain Gets Life Sentence JERUSALEM — Ziad Abu Eain, the Palestinian extradited from Chicago to face charges of planting a bomb in Tiberias that killed two boys and injured 36 per- sons, was sentenced last week in Israel and given a life term in prison. Arab spokesman in the U.S. claim that Abu Eain was falsely accused by a convicted terrorist who thought that he could not be extradiate by the U.S. They claim the Israeli court ig- nored the testimony of a dozen Arab witnesses who said Abu Eain was working in Ramallah, 90 miles from Tiberias, on the day of the 1979 bombing. Religion is in the heart, not in the knees. - the board of governors and members of the Jewish Agency Assembly who con- vened in Jerusalem this week, travelled in convoy to Beaufort and Nabatiye, the main PLO stronghold until three weeks ago. and the oil lamp lights up the path that we may take for ourselves. Holding the center are the two modern candles- ticks and the mezzuzot with the Hebrew letter "shin." On the extreme left and right are a silver pitcher with its gay designs and a colored glass bottle and cup reminiscent of modern Is- raeli glass blowing. The corked bottles filled with sweet-smelling per- fume and other enchanting aromas are balanced by the wine cups surrounding an elegant wine pitcher whose narrow spout carefully measures out the flowing wine. This modest display of Jewish art, old but new, in glass and silver, both mod- ern and traditional, hints at the richness and originality of Jewish art forms in Is- rael.
