Israel Agriculture Official Meets Food Leaders Here By HEIDI PRESS On a one-week visit to the U.S. last week on behalf of Israel Bonds, Yahalomah Shehory, deputy director general of Israel's Ministry of Agriculture, was in De- troit to meet with food in- dustry leadership. During her' one-day visit to Detroit, Ms. Shehory talked about new develop- ments in the agricultural scene in Israel. She described a form of genetic engineering taking place in plant nurseries in Israel. The process involves creating new plants from tissue culture of existing strong plants. On a com- mercial scale, she said that countries throughout the world send a "mother" plant to Israel, from which seedl- ings are created from tissue culture. The seedlings are sent back in bottles to the source. A graduate of Hebrew University and Michigan State University, Ms. Shehory said that she is an exception in the ag- ricultural ministry. "I am a woman and I don't have an agricultural back- ground," she said. "Israel is making agreements on a bilateral and multilateral basis. Israel is ready for partnerships of this sort," she said. Asked about the role of computers in agriculture, Ms. Shehory said they were in use extensively in pack- ing houses, in milk pro- duction and in chicken coops, which are fully au- tomated. On the kibutzim, com- puters are used for long- term planning of farms. She remarked, "A manager doesn't consider himself a manager unless his has a computer." She added that "elec- tronics is the biggest indus- try in Israel," primarily in the export of hardware (equipment) and software (programs). Questioned about the effect the current fight- ing has on the industry, she said the northern border areas were suffer- ing. "All of the fruit industry is in the north. (We) can't go picking in the orchards." In summer, many Ameri- cans, particularly students, come to Israel to work on the kibutzim. She said that the Americans were "definitely a help," since extra hands are al- ways needed. From Detroit, where she also met a delegation of Is- rael Bond women, Ms. . Shehory was scheduled to go to Cleveland. While in the U.S. she was scheduled to meet with farmers, food store and food industry leadership.
