Friedmans Sponsor Yiddish Learning

On Wednesday after-
noons at the Jewish Home
for the Aged, Borman Hall,
one can hear entertaining
Yiddish readings. Morris
Nobel, professor of Hebrew
and Yiddish at the Mid-

Studies, reads and com-
ments on Yiddish selections
from Sholem Aleichem,
Isaac Leib Peretz, Sholom
Asch and others.
On Wednesday evenings,
a Yiddish class is held at the
Reform College of Jewish
Studies atTemple Beth El.
nners are learning the
cs of Yiddish conversa-
tion. On Sunday mornings,
conversational Yiddish is
taught as an elective in the
United Hebrew Schools
High School. Other classes
are held at the Midrasha as
well.
This resurgence of inter-
est in Yiddish language, lit-
erature and culture has
been made possible for the
past several years by Morris
and Sarah Friedman who

Lebanon Invasion Delays
EEC-Israel Agreement

BONN (JTA)— Diploma-
tic sources here confirmed
Tuesday that the European
Economic Community
(EEC) has postponed the
signing of a "financial pro-
tocol" with Israel as an ex-
pression of displeasure over
Israel's invasion of Leba-
non. The signing was to
have taken place in Brus-
sels.
The protocol, negotiated
about six months ago, would
provide some $40 million in
credits for Israel from the
European Bank foi Invest-
ments over the next five
years. Although the credits
bear the prevailing com-
mercial interest rates, they

are considered to be of some
political significance.

Meanwhile, Foreign
Minister Hans-Dietrich
Genscher said Tuesday that
West Germany will support
the evacuation of all foreign
forces from Lebanon as a
key condition to restore
Lebanese sovereignty and
territorial integrity. He
said that by foreign forces
he meant not only Israeli
troops. Asked whether he
included the Palestine Lib-
eration Organization, the
foreign minister replied,
"That will be the decision of
an elected Lebanese gov-
ernment."

Consulates Hit
in Switzerland

GENEVA (JTA) —
Bombs exploded outside the
Israeli Consulate and the
U.S. Consulate in Zurich
last week causing damage
estimated at $50,000 but no
casualties. The explosions
occurred 10 minutes apart.
The American legation and
the office building housing
the Israeli Consulate were
unoccupied at the time.
A hitherto unknown
group calling itself the
"Revolutionary Cell"
claimed responsibility for
the bombings. According to
police, the group is com-
posed of international ter-
rorists, including some
Swiss.
One of the latter is Bruno
Brege who was once ar-
rested in Israel and sen-
tenced to several years im-
prisonment for smuggling
explosives.

'Tail' on Talit
Assures Garment
Is Worn Right

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

(Copyright 1982, JTA, Inc.)

A strip of cloth is always
affixed to one edge of the
talit (i.e. prayer shawl).
One reason given is the
explanation that this strip
will insure that the talit is
always worn with the same
side up. There is a general
rule that once something
has been assigned for a top
level it should not be re-
duced to a lower level. This
is a general indication that
one should not lower the
prestige of people to insult
them.
Another reason offered is
the claim that this practice
will enable the talit to cling
closer to the body of the one
who wears it and_prevent it
from slipping off.
It is also claimed that this
is like a crown in the sense
that he who wears the talit
is crowned with the Royalty
of the Almighty. It is also
indicative of the require-
ment to crown and beautify
whatever obligatory func-
tion we perform for our reli-
gious requirement.
