THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Kashrut of Fish Explained The Metropolitan Kas- hruth Council of Michigan has issued guidelines con- cerning fresh and frozen fish that have recently made their appearance in the Detroit area. The Torah states that animals that live under water, in order to be kosher, must have fins and scales (Leviticus 10:9-12). How- ever, unlike meat and poul- try, fish do not require any specific type of ritual slaughter (shehita); they may merely be removed from the water and pre- red for consumption.
