Brandeis Award to Philip Slomovitz, editor of The Jewish News and a dean of Jewish jour- nalism. In making the presenta- tion to Slomovitz, and his wife, Anna, Ivan J. He added that the Slomovitzes would "al- ways stand up and be counted for Zionism and would maintain the vital link of Zionist commitment in Detroit." Novick asserted that Slomovitz represented the spirit of Brandeis "by per- sonal example." Slomovitz has held var- ious positions in the ZOA. He currently serves as an honorary vice president of the ZQA. "Phil • Slomovitz epitomizes the ideals of Brandeis who was commit- ted to Zionism, Israel, America and the rights and dignity of men and women of good will throughout the world," said Mr. Novick. Past recipients of the Brandeis Award include Abba Eban, George Meany, William Randolph Hearst, Jr, Bayard Rustin, Elizabeth Taylor and New York State Attorney Gen- eral Robert Abrams, among other distinguished person- ages. In responding to the Brandeis Award, Slomovitz said that his Zionist credo was that "for the sake of Zion, never be silent," as well as, "have no fear." He called on those present "to work for justice for . our people." "Make certain," he told the large audience of ZOA delegates and , friends gathered for the luncheon honoring him that "no de- structive elements remain at our back." He called for unity and action for Israel. Also noting Slomovitz' dedication to the Jewish community and to Zionism was Max Fisher. He called for unity in the American Jewish community and said that American Jews would again be called on to stand by Israel and help her in these difficult days.
