Shaarey Zedek and the sem- inary 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Morris Adler Hall. Rosen received the degree of Bachelor of Hebrew Lit- erature at the seminary in addition to BA, MBA and JD degrees at Columbia University. Also speaking will be Rabbi Allan Schranz, the newly appointed assistant to the chancellor of the sem- inary. A movie about the li- brary fire and the new li- brary being built • will be shown. The highlight of the evening will be the recognition of all past Mortgage burning by synagogues is not too fre- quent, yet, by the same to- ken, not new. Shaarey Zedek burned its mortgage several years ago. Adat Shalom aims for that oppor- tunity in the very near fu- ture. Other synagogues are aiming for such removal of financial burdens. Nevertheless, the reach- ing of a stage of wiping out the congregation's debt by Temple Beth El assumes major significance. As the first Detroit syna- gogue and therefore the old- est in the state of Michigan, it is viewed here as an occa- sion of interest by all Jewish factions and becomes an event gaining statewide at- tention. The mortgage-burning ceremony will take place at Temple Beth El's 132nd annual meeting, 8 p.m. Thursday at the Temple on Telegraph and 14 Mile. Marvin Goldman, president of Temple Beth El, expressed pride in the fact that the final payment Peggy M. Frank heads the arrangements coin-. mittee and a champagne reception will follow. The two Beth El structures preceding the current one are still within the memory of many De- troiters. The one located on Woodward and Eliot func- tioned from 1903 to 1922. It was followed by the structure on Woodward and Gladstone, where religious services and educational and community events were in action from 1922 until 1973, when the present temple was dedicated. Three earlier synagogues are part of the Jewish community's emergence los and its multiple activities. The first synagogue, on Congress and St. Antoine, served the sommunity from 1850 to 1861. It was fol- lowed by the temple on Rivard Street, 1861 to 1867. The temple on Washington Boulevard was in service from 1967 to 1903.
