Under an Agency for Inter-
national Development
grant, the Egyptian gov-
ernment and Allis-
Chalmers Corp. have signed
a contract in Cairo for ap-
proximately $80 million to
replace critical parts of the
Soviet-built turbines in the
Aswan High Dam. The
work is expected to take six
years.

roelectric power plant at the
high dam began operations
in 1967. The number and
severity of the cracks have

Senator Bob Packwood

Great-grandson of an Oregon pioneer,
Senator Packwood graduated from Wil-
lamette University and New York Uni-
versity School of Law.
In 1962 he Was elected to the Oregon
House of Representatives as the
youngest member of that Legislature.
In 1968 he was elected to tle United
States Senate as the youngest Senator in
the 91st Congress and is now serving his
3rd term.
Senator Packwood is Chairman of the
Commerce, Science and Transportation
Committee; Chairman of the Taxation
Subcommittee of the Finance Commit-
tee and a member of the Small Business,
Committee.
