26 Friday, June 18, 1982 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Israeli Action in Lebanon Draws Criticism from Opposition Party JERUSALEM (JTA) — Public criticism is begin- ning to be voiced over the Israeli government's han- dling of the war in Lebanon and indeed over the neces- sity for the war.Some Labor Party figures have begun to air criticism, and the Peace Now Movement, having de- liberately kept silent up to now, placed newspaper ads Tuesday demanding that the hostilities end. The criticism is still muted, in view of the ongo- ing state of military emer- gency and the sorrow and grief that has befallen so many Israeli families in the wake of the war casualties. He said he would wait until the mourning period was over. But some members of the faction did not wait. Adi Amorai noted that more Israelis were killed in this campaign against the Palestine Liberation Organization in Lebanon than had been killed by the PLO over the past dozen years. But other Laborites, such as Michael Bar Zohar and Shoshana Arbeli, spoke in favor of both the initial op- eration against the PLO and the ex-tended baffles with the Syrians. The Peace Now ads note that thousands of civilians "are being killed in this war" and "this is unprece- dented in Israeli's wars." Movement leaders said they would still disist from street demonstrations pend- ing a stabilization of the ceasefire, but they indicated that such demonstrations would be called. Meanwhile,. Chief of Staff Rafael Eitan Tues- day dismi -Ssed reports that some 10,000 civilian dead resulted from the Israeli attacks and that up to 600,000 were ren- dered homeless. Briefing the Knesset Foreign Af- fairs and Defense Com- mittee' which toured the battle zones in the east, Eitan said such figures were enormously in- flated. Eitan also said that PLO chief Yasir Arafat had sought and recieved asylum at the Soviet embassy in Be- NEW YORK — William D. Broyles Jr. has been cho- sen to succeed Lester Berns- tein as editor of Newsweek magazine. Broyles, a 37-year-old writer and educator who helped establish the highly respected and profitable Texas Monthly magazine, will take over the editor's chair in September. Bernstein, 61, is credited with enhancing the maga- zine's editorial reputation during the three years he held the post. In April, Newsweek was awarded National Magazine awards for general excellence and for its single-topic issue tracing and explaining the lasting effect that the Viet-nam War had on the United States.
