Mondry to Speak at HMC Event

A parlor meeting on be-
half of the Holocaust Memo-
rial Center's Capital Gifts
and Endowment fund will
be held June 29 at the home
of Alexander and Gabriella
Karp in Southfield. Guest
speaker at the 8 p.m.
gathering is communal
leader David S. Mondry.
Under construction on
the site of the Jewish Com-
munity Center in West
Bloomfield, the Holocaust
Memorial Center will be the
only facility in this country
devoted exclusively to the
study of the Holocaust. The
Capital Gifts and Endow-
ment Fund, under chair-
man Henry S. Dorfman, is
working to ensure the
Memorial Center's comple-
tion and ongoing operation.
According to Dorfman, half
the necessary funds have
already been pledged by the
community.
Founded by Shaarit Hap-
laytah, a group of Holocaust
survivors, the center is
scheduled for completion at
the end-of this summer. As a
memorial to six million
Jews, it will house an arc-
hives, as well as facilities
for educational programm-
ing and scholarly research.
Executive director is Rabbi
Charles Rosenzveig.
Mondry, guest speaker
at the June 29 meeting,
has been active for many
years in the Allied Jewish
Campaign, serving as
Campaign chairman in
1981. He currently is a
board member of the De-
troit Service Group, Sinai
Hospital and the Jewish
Welfare Federation.
The meeting chairman is
Alexander Karp; Alexander
Ehrmann and Abraham
Pasternak are co-chairmen.
The committee includes
Allen and Franka Char-
lupski, Mala Dorfman,
Fred Ferber, David B.
Hermelin, Earl Ishbia,

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
In 1980 Israel had 1,066,000
tourists. In 1981 there were
26,000 less, a drop of some
2.5 percent. Israel's Minis-
try of Tourism, however, is
more concerned about the
steady decline of tourists
from the U.S.
In 1979 there were
298,000 American visitors,
in 1980 only 285,000 and in
1981 the number had fallen
to 268,000 — a decline of 10
percent within two years.
At the same time the
number of tourists from
Europe increased. In 1980
there were 437,000 tourists
from West Germany,
France and England.
According to the news-
paper Davar there is suffi-
cient hotel capacity to ac-
commodate hundreds of
thousands of additional
guests, since the hotel occu-
pancy rate in 1981 was only
52%.

The term "Diaspora," re-
ferring to Jews living out-
side Israel, is derived from
the Greek word for disper-
sion.

Karp.
Also Andrea Laker, Irv-
ing Lichtman, Sol Moss,
John Pollak, Robert
Richman, Zoltan Rubin,

Julius and Rose Schaum-
berg, Sam Seltzer, Dr. Ale-
xander S. Ullman and
Robert A. Weltman.
