Lichtenstein, a French teacher and a lan- guage specialist, an associ- ate as volunteer and leader in many movements, died June 9 at age 88. Born in Latvia, the former Esther Is- sacharowitz went to France and was evacuated during World. War I from Paris as she was completing her studies at the Sorbonne, for settlement in the United States. She had specialized in several languages. She first went to Toledo. In 1914; she came to Detroit to marry Samuel Lichtens- tein. For many years their home served as a social as- semblage for many causes. Mrs. Lichtenstein was espe- cially identified with the Pioneer Women Chana Czenesh Chapter, in which she served as corresponding secretary and held life membership, with Hadas- sah and the American Jewish Congress. In the lat- ter, she served on many committees and organized forces in civic protective af- fairs. She was especially known in her role as teacher of French and headed that department from 1921 to 1930 in the then famous Miss New- MRS. LICHTgNSTEIN man's School. Many prominent women were her students, and they learned fluent French with her, always address- ing her as Madame Lichtenstein. Mrs. Lichtenstein was the past president of the Mlawer Ungegend Farein and a former officer in the Alliance Francais.
