THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Bnai Brith Reports on Status
WASHINGTON — The
state of the order is good —
but not good enough,"
President Jack Spitzer told
the Bnai Brith Interna-
tional Board of Governors
meeting last month.
Spitzer touched on a
variety of topics, from a pro-
posal to add to the respon-
sibilities of the Bnai Brith
Administrative Committee
to a plan to acquire a string
of low-power television sta-
tions that may become
available to nonprofit
organizations.
e said the outlook is
rable for great growth
aril development in Israel,
that the total number of
Bnai Brith members has de-
clined about two percent
since last year, that Bnai
Brith has reduced its debt
from $4 million in 1978 to
$1.6 million as of Dec. 31,
not including the mortgage
on the headquarters build-
ing.
Because of the change
in -fiscal years, which
budgets a six-month
period at a time of low in-
come, the debt will rise
again, probably to $3.4
million by June 30.
He said that in the last
four years, Bnai Brith
Dr. William Haber of Ann Arbor, chairman of the
Bnai Brith International Retirement Committee, is
shown giving a report at the annual meeting in Wash-
ington. Seated at left is Jack Spitzer, Bnai Brith Inter-
national president.

Women's contribution to
youth services has dropped
from $869,000 to $347,000.
Like their male colleagues,
the women must increase
both their membership and
fund raising, Spitzer said.
The board approved a
budget of $12,217,239. This
is a 9.8 percent increase
over the $11,123,738 spent
in 1981.
The bulk of the money —
$7,503,561 or 61 percent —
has been allocated to youth
services: The Bnai Brith
Hillel Foundations, Bnai
Brith Youth Organization
and Career and Counseling
Services.
The remainder of the
budget will be used to fund
Bnai Brith commissions,
councils, and committees;
service and administrative
departments; the World
Center in Jerusalem and
the International Council
offices at the United Na-
tions, Washington and
elsewhere in the world.
