Some 34 American crew- men were killed and 171 were wounded in the attack. Israel apologized for the in- cident and paid a $6 million indemnity, saying its forces had thought the ship was an Egyptian vessel. First efforts will bring some 50 French Jewish families to Israel in the near future. The campaign was aimed "at those who will be able to do the same work here as they did there — electricians and similarly skilled or semi-skilled workers," the ministry's new director-general, Eli Artzi, told reporters. -"I started with French Jewry because I know them best," he stated. "If it suc- ceeds, we'll go door-to-door in the U.S. and Canada." As a gesture to the sur- vivors, the Department of the Army will change the inscription on the grave of six Liberty crewmen in Ar- lington National Cemetery. The marker says the six "died in the Eastern Mediterranean, June 8, 1967." The revised marker will read, "Killed, USS Lib- erty, June 8, 1967." Japanese Seek WZO Affiliation JERUSALEM (JNI) — The "Makoya" pro-Israel Japanese movement has asked to become an associ- ate member of the Zionist movement. If accepted, it will become the first non- Jewish group to gain mem- bership in the World Zionist Organization. WZO chairman Arye Dulzin, who just returned from a speaking tour of the Far East, favors granting the Makoya request. The 1,000 Makoya families, who speak Hebrew and conduct regular pil- grimages to Israel, contrib- ute substantially to the $1 million raised each year for Israel's Far East Jewish communities.
