NEW YORK (ZINS) —
Almost 25 million people in
the United States ( one of
every nine) are 65 years and
older. This age group consti-
tutes 11.2 percent of the
population. Among Jews,
the 65 and over group con-
stitutes 14-15 percent of the
total Jewish population and
40 percent of this group are
75 and over.
According to Billie
Portnow writing in the
monthly Jewish Currents,
the Jewish nursing homes
covered by Medicare and
Medicaid have the highest
standards in the country. Of
the Jewish elderly, 40 per-
cent live alone in New York
City compared to 29 percent
of others and 33 percent of
the national elderly popula-
tion.
Living with spouses are
45 percent (same as general
population), and less than
10 percent live with chil-
dren or relatives. The
Jewish communal agencies
and senior citizen centers
serve more than 100,000 el-
derly annually with the
help of government fund-
ing.
