Conference organizer Is- rael Charney of Philadel- phia, who teaches at TAU, told the New York Times that "there was serious pressure to cancel the con- ference because of Turkish insistence that the Arme- nian genocide of 70 years ago not be discussed." Wiesel's allegations were reportedly made in Paris, according to Charney. Wiesel, a survivor of the Holocaust, is chairman of the U.S. Holocaust Corn- mission and will chair the TAU genocide conference. In Istanbul, leaders of the Jewish community denied the allegations of pressure and were upset by the charges. The government of Israel has withdrawn its official participation in the confer- ence. A Foreign Ministry spokesman said the gov- ernment was opposed to linking the Holocaust with "Armenian allegations of genocide." Some 1.5 million Arme- nians were killed by the Turks during a period end- ing in 1915. The conference, slated to open on Thursday, had been and his Orchestra . plus scheduled to discuss the Holocaust, the Armenian tragedy, repression against the Cambodians, gypsies, Tibet and others.
