Suspicious Israel
CAIRO (ZINS) — Com-
menting in an Arab maga-
zine on the peace and au-
tonomy negotiations with
Israel, Egyptian President
Hosni Mubarak said:
"A state that is sur-
rounded by all the Arab
states with everyone hiding
in ambush for it naturally
will be suspicious. If we
were in its place, we would
be suspicious too."
It is not enough to suc-
ceed. Others must fail.

ISRAEL'S PAINFUL INTERNAL DEBATE
I
' srael remains one of the
few nations on this small
planet where public policy is openly
debated and • citizens are free to
disagree with governmental decisions
and offer alternatives. It is certainly
the only country in the Middle East
where the freedom of dissent is ac-
cepted and widely practiced.
The American public is largely
unaware of the fact that there is a
significant public debate going on in
Israel right now. As the nation enters
its 35th year of tenuous existence its
citizens are struggling with the most
fundamental of questions. At stake is
the survival of the State . and the
nature of the State which will survive.
It is little wonder that the
American observor, ' both Jew and
non-Jew, is confused by the pattern
of events. In the same week Israel can
return the Sinai to Egypt (a glorious
gamble for peace) and also conduct
pre-emptive air raids into Lebanon
which appear to many to be in excess
of the provocation. Settlers are
removed by physical force from the
Sinai at the same time that new set-
tlements are announced' for the West
Bank (Judea and Samaria.) One is an
unprecedented act of reconciliation,
the other an indication that the oc-
cupation may become institutionaliz-
ed and permanent.
Many policies presently being im-
plemented on the West Bank are con-
fusing and disturbing to many sup-
ports of Israel. Will the directions be-
ing taken by the current government
genuinely assure the survival of
Israel, or are they self-defeating in
their very nature? .
Increasing numbers of Israeli
citizens are wrestling with the same
questions. Moshe Unna, one of the
founders of the Religious Kibbutz
Movement, says: "Our approach
sees in Zionism a constructive move-
ment which is based on positive
ethical and social principles prin-
ciples which have prevented us in the
past, and should prevent us in the
future, from being drawn into blind
nationalism, militarism, and the ig-
noring of fundamental human
values.''
Uriel Simon, professor of Bible at
Bar Ilan University, declares: "The
Jewishness of the State of Israel will
be determined by the country's
spiritual and ethical content and not
by its size...It pains me to lose part of
Eretz Yisrael, but the thought of the
State of Israel ruling by farce over
one million Arabs is much more
painful to me than having to live with
less than all of Eretz Yisrael."
No one can predict how this inter-
nal struggle will be resolved, but we
can be certain that it will find its
resolution through the democratic
process.

Former Detroiter Dr.
Leonard Felder has co-
authored "Learning to Love
Forever" (MacMillan), a
guide designed to aid those
who are entering, leaving or
just struggling along in a re-
lationship.
The book, which was a
joint effort between Dr. Fel-
der and best-selling author
Adelaide Bry, consists of 40
daily lessons and short
exercises. The program
aims to improve receptivity,
awareness and sensitivity
and sets forth practical
skills and problem-solving
techniques crucial to the
well-being of a relationship.
Each day focuses on a
specific concept and in-
cludes a discussion of its
importance, attendant
problems and possible reso-
lutions. The different chap-
ters conclude with several
easy-to-perform psychologi-
cal exercises.
Personal and positive
in tone, "Learning to
Love Forever" addresses
both familiar obstacles
and their more subtle
sources, including how to
overcome fears and in-
hibitions, how to express
anger without destroying
one's partner, and how
partners can keep from
smothering each other in
a relationship.
Dr. Felder, who now
makes his home in Santa
Monica, Calif., has an MBA
in psychology from the
University of Pittsburgh
and a PhD from the Univer-
sity of Humanistic Studies
in California.
Adelaide Bry, a writer
and psychotherapist, has
been a psychological busi-
ness consultant for the state
of Pennsylvania and several
major corporations. Sh€
lives in San Diego and is the
author of 11 books.
