"But what about Jewish
national culture? Some
people in the West believe it
is being pushed into the
background. Is that really
the case?
"According to statistics,
271 books by Jewish
authors (total number of
copies: 18 million) have
come out in Yiddish since
1967.
"In 1980 alone 24 books
in Yiddish came out in mass
editions. Moreover, the
works of Soviet Jewish
writers have become the
property of the whole of
Soviet culture thanks to
translations into the other
languages spoken in the
USSR .. .
The works of the
Jewish classical writers
are widely published in
the USSR. Sholom
Aleichem came out in the
USSR translated into 24
languages (9,500,000
copies); the works of
Itsyk Perets were re-
printed 50 times and the
works of Mendel
Moher-Sforim, 33 times.
"In recent years, Soviet
Jewish prose has been
enriched by a number of
works by contemporary
authors which have been

Novosti's Version
of Passover
"The several thousand be-
lievers who assembled on
April 8 at the Moscow
Choral Synagogue to attend
the Passover service were
addressed by Chief Rabbi
Jacob Fishman. The choir
was led by Cantors Emanuil
Kaplun from Moscow and
Mikhail Arons from Riga.
"The traditional four
glasses of grape wine were
drunk and national Jewish
dishes were served at the
festive Seder. The dishes
were prepared by Svetlana
Zelenitskaya, chef of the
kosher dining room.
"Most of the believers
went home after the serv-
ice to take part in Seders
together with relatives
and friends. Some people
remained in the syna-
gogue and sang and
danced right there in the
street. In the current
year, the matzot bakery
produced 135 tons of
matzot, while a total of
more than 700 tons were
sold in the Judaic com-
munities all over the
Soviet Union.
"Matvey Lifshitz, the cut-
ter, was extremely busy on
the eve of the holiday, for he
had to supply kosher meat
and poultry not only to the
Seder in the synagogue, but
also to individual members
of the community on their
request . ."
MAKOR-LIMANOV: It
is true that on all major
holidays thousands of Jews
(though not all of them are
believers) come to the syna-
gogue. In Moscow there is
only one synagogue. It is
also true that on the street
near the synagogue KGB
