The Kashrut Controversy Editor, The Jewish News: The recent controversy between the Orthodox rab- bis, regarding butcher shops under their supervi- sion, brings again into focus the need for a complete re- vision of practices involving kashrut. As it stands now, there exists an undeniable con- flict of interest, when on one hand the rabbi is required to conduct his supervising on the basis of Halakha and on the other, he is being paid for his service by those he is supposed to supervise. Until and unless this contradic- tion in principles is elimi- nated, supervision is largely an exercise not worthy of consideration. Another aspect of rab- binic supervision is the proliferation of this so called supervision. If the rabbis would approach this matter conscien- tiously and with integ- rity, they would inform the public, giving the rea- son why an item needs rabbinic supervision and make this part of their Koshergram. The consumer going to the market must ask him- self why there are so many food items indicating rab- binic involvement. Supervi- sion where not necessary, and supervision by an occa- sional visit, makes a moc- kery of Jewish principles, the likes of which we can ill afford.
