the track around Wayne
State University's football
field.
Originated last year by
Joe Beato, executive chef at
Henry Ford Hospital and
president of the Chef's 200
Club, The Great Soup Ket-
tle Race pits employees of
various food services and
dining establishments
against each other in
"chariots" made from large
soup kettles, plus foot races.
It's a lot of fun and raises
money for March of Dimes
. . . Last year's winners
were Vendor's Relay Race,
Empire Packing . . . Most
Creative Kettle, Golden
Mushroom . . . Honorable
mention for most creative
kettle, The Gnome . . .
First place in Great Soup
Kettle Race, Burger Chef
store #1324 . . . Second
place, Golden Mushroom.
IT'S COMEDY NIGHT
every Sunday, 8:30, at
Scandals in Ramada Inn of
Southfield on Telegraph
. . . featuring noted comics
in the local and traveling
circuits.
HOA KOW on Nine
Mile west of Coolidge in
Oak Park goes on and on
like the Great Wall of China
.. serving very good
Chi
nese cuisine since Oak
Park was just a child . . . It
was the first Chinese res-
taurant to make those de-
licious silver noodles . . .
That was 22 years ago.
If you like salads, they
have one there that's delici-
ous, different and needs no
dressing . . . I think it's
called the Hoa Kow Salad
(shredded chicken, cashew
nuts, head lettuce, soy bean
noodles and chopped scall-
ions).
A couple of dishes you
won't find at too many
places are the Crisp As-
paragus Chicken . . . and
Home Breaded Serod .

QUESTIONS AND
ANSWERS . . . by Joan
Wittenberg of Healthy
Jones . . .
I know Vitamin C is
good for many things but
is it also a stress fighter as
I've been told?
Yes. Howard Lutz, direc-
tor of the Institute for Pre-
ventive Medicine 'in Wash-
ington, D.C., says that Vit-
amin C is capable of adding
years to your life. This is
possible because it raises
our tolerance for everyday
stress as well as our resis-
tance to stress-related
illnesses such as infection
and allergies.
What is the best way to
protect my children from
sunburn?
Paba is the most active
single ingredient in protec-
tion from the harmful rays
of the sun. Try an excellent
mixture of safflower oil and
paba. Apply before your
child goes out in the sun and
reapply if water has washed
it off.

Joan gives her recipe for a
super refreshing summer
drink ?' . "In your blender
put one ge
lar banana, about
eight unsweetened straw-
berries, either frozen or
fresh, a couple of ladles of
crushed ice. Fill the blender
with apple cider close to the
top and blend for 20 seconds.
It is absolutely great and
will make about four nice
glasses full. Happy sum-
mer!
