The Best of Everything

MANY TIMES a
neighborhood restaurant -
lounge will go unsung when
it comes to having a good
meal at a reasonable price.
This is the case with
Jakk's, Greenfield and 10
Mile, which has been at the
Royal Oak Township loca-
tion for many years . . .
also a fun spot . . . and the
prime example of a place
being taken for granted.
Like the former Darby's,
if a spot like Jakk's were no
more, it would be missed by
many people who -would
talk of "the good old days
there" . . . the congenial-
ity, friendliness and homey
atmosphere . . . To a lot of
people, Jakk's is somewhat
of a home away from home.
The food is far above
par . . . with one of the
finest chefs around in
Chuck Formosa, whose
experience is such that
makes for good solid din-
ing, whether it be lunch
or dinner.
Dollar for dollar, the
dinners at Jakk's are prob-
ably among the best values
in town . . . There are oo-
dles of specials each night
. . . with meals from soup
to potato or vegetable to
salad bar . . . The lowest
price special is $5.95 for
chiken livers and the high-
est $10.50 for king crab legs
. . . In between are always
about five or six seafood
items from $7.75 to $8.95
. . . There's also Chuck's
popular $6.95 specials of
broiled whitefish or petit
filet . . . and even early
bird items from $5.25, 4 to 8,
Monday-Friday.
The food at Jakk's is good
fare . . . and complimented
by the excellent service . . .
Donna Platt, Cinda Shim-
mell and Carey McMichael
are all personable servers
. . . efficient, courteous and
pleasant . . . Usually, or-
dinary neighborhood
restaurant-lounges can not
boast of such customer-
pleasing talent Jakk's
is lucky to have the kind of
waitresses people can relate
to in their home-away-
from-home attitudes.
Behind the bar evenings
is Charlie Bonnier, who
knows people . . . their
likes and dislikes . . . but
most of all concentrates
highly on attentiveness.
Holding sway Wednes-
day through Saturday
evenings at the piano bar
is Carl Steger . . . one of
the area's premier
entertainers . . . playing
piano, singing, doing his
repartee thing . . . and
never ceasing to amaze
customers with his
knowledge, of tunes, who
they were written by and
when . . . Also his excel-
lent ability playing songs
most people know . . .
and what they want to
hear . . . Carl knows
people, too . . . and their
likes . . . He does his ut-
most to please . . . and
seldom fails.
The atmosphere at Jakk's
is much better than your
normal neighborhood

restaurant-lounge . . .
Padded open booths and ta-
bles in a setting of soft
lights, mirrors and well-
appointed decorations
choicely done with neat
simplicity . . . Chef Chuck
Formosa's kitchen is well-
equipped, clean and capable
of producing menu items, --
without delay to his specific'
wants . . . It had been re-
modeled when owners Dick
and Aggie LaCombe took
over from Harold Allen and
Ed and Herb Goldberg . .
Before them, it was owned
by Jack Freedman.
The food at Jakk's is
among the best dollar
values around . . . and it's a
fun place . . . Some eve-
nings, Saturday nites espe-
cially, people can almost
expect to run into others
they haven't seen in years
. . . Former Detroiters here
for a visit know of Jakk's
reputation for meeting
people and high-tail it there
to see a lot of folks they
know.
And what would a
neighborhood restaurant-
lounge be without a good
hamburger? . . . Yes,
there's a real good one at
Jakk's.
Whatever it takes . . .
good food, good service, good
entertainment, good fun
and convivialty, Jakk's has
the right combination.
MANY FOLKS RE-
MEMBER Maria's Pizzeria
and Mencotti's on Puritan
. . . or have heard about
them . . . And Frank Men-
cotti today is seeing a lot of
his old customers plus meet-
ing their children . . . at
Pizza Plenty in Tally Hall,
Orchard Lake Rd. and 14
Mile.
Frank opened Maria's in
1949 with seating for 70
people . . . In 1954, Joe
Slavik put on an addition
that brought it to 250 . . .
Then Mencotti's was built
in 1958, bringing the
capacity to 400.
Joe is now one of the own-
ers at Tally Hall and has the
Pizza Plenty sector . . . He
heard Frank was back in
town and contacted him to
run the carry-out pizzeria.
After Maria's and Men-
cotti's burned down in
1968, Frank opened a res-
taurant in Wilmington,
Del. . . . and has been
back two years.
He is credited with mak-
ing the first frozen pizza
back in 1950 . . . selling his
first order of 2,000 to Writ'
ley Super Markets . . .
Frank had Maria's and was
more interested in that than
going into the frozen pizza
business . . . If you're by
Tally Hall, stop in by Pizza
Plenty and say hello to
Frank.

TION of show business con-
