New Ship of Desert' a Sheep?

BEERSHEVA — Two
rams and 20 sheep were
flown to Israel via El Al Air-
lines earlier-this spring as
part of a special project to
introduce a new breed
known as "Dorper" into Is-
rael from South Africa's
Karroo.
The Karroo is a dry, flat
area in Cape Province with
little rain and no grass —
closely resembling parts of
the Negev. In this area, the

South Africans have de-
veloped a special breed of
sheep which is a cross be-
tween an English Dorset
and a Persian, hence the
name Dorper.
Israel has long been in-
terested in obtaining these
sheep from South Africa,
but the problems involved
in assuring that the im-
ported sheep did not also
import exotic African sheep
diseases was a deterrent
until now.
However, under a joint
project of Pretoria Univer-
sity and Ben-Gurion Uni-
versity of the Negev, with
the active participation of
the two country's Veteri-
nary Services and Insti-
tutes, a program to prevent
such infection was suc-
cessfully designed and exe-
cuted. The newcomers now
are safely bedded down in
special quarantine quarters
at the veterinary center in
Beersheva.
The animals will be iso-
lated for several months
in their temporary home.
If all goes well, they will
then be released to begin
an active sex life in the
Negev. They will be com-
pared with and bred to
the local Awassi sheep to
upgrade the quality and
quantity of mutton pro-
duced. ,
The Dorper is of special
interest because its Persian
breeding has adapted it to
the arid conditions of the
Negev, and yet it is known
to give a high quality meat
carcass.
The breed is highly fer-
tile, having a 95 percent
twinning rate compared to
the 10 percent twinning
rate of the local Awassi
sheep raised for meat in the
Negev. The animals were
especially selected and do-
nated free of charge by the
South African Dorper
Breeder's Association.
The Dorpers began their
odyssey when they were
transported from their
homes in the Karroo to a
quarantine facility at the
South African Veterinary
Institute at Ondersterpoort,
where they were kep under
rigid, environmentally-
controlled conditions for
two months.
During that time they
were tested for some 25
diseases, and only 22 of
the original 45 sheep
passed. They were placed
in specially constructed
metal screened
enclosures, and shipped
by El Al to Israel. At Lod,
the animals were met by
veterinarians from
Ben-Gurion University
and the Ministry of Ag-
riculture, and were
transported in the middle
of the night to their
newly-constructed
quarantine facilities at
the university.
There, the animals were

sprayed to kill all foreign
insects and were vaccinated
against Israeli diseases by
the Ministry of Agriculture.
The university plans to
build this small group into a
flock which will eventually
provide breeding animals
for the farmers of the
Negev, Jews and Bedouin
alike, It is believed that, if
this breed adapts to Israeli
pastures and
environmental conditions,
it will eventually replace
the Awassi as the mutton-
producing breed for our arid
South and will make a
major impact on the
economy of the Negev.
