'Last Waltz in Vienna' Book
Recalls Europe's Nazi Era

By MARGUERITE
KOZENN CHAJES

George Clare's "The Last
Waltz in Vienna" (Holt,
Rinehart and Winston) tells
the moving story of his own
family, its rise and destruc-
tion from 1842 to 1942. He
traces his lineage back to
the emigration of his
great-grandfathers from
Eastern Europe to Vienna.
Some of the family mem-
bers came from my home
town, Czernowitz, and this
fact brought Clare's book
even closer to me.
In Vienna, Clare's family,
in the course of 100 years,
gained in prestige and
prominence as they con-
tributed doctors, govern-
ment officials and leading
businessmen to the com-
munity. He also describes
the Vienna of his childhood
in all its charm. There were
and still are few cities in the
world, where the artists and
cultural achievements were
held in such high esteem.
The disruption of life
was absolutely total
when Hitler marched
into Vienna in March
1938. Like other Jewish
families trapped in the
city, Clare's family could
not understand how they
had failed to recognize
the danger. They tried to
flee.
George Clare fled to Ire-
land, while his parents
found refuge in France.
However, they were moved
to a village in the south of
France. There, they were
betrayed by a French
policeman, who handed

States six years ago.
Manevich said that he
knew very little of his
Jewish heritage in the
Soviet Union. He has been

them over for deportation to
a Polish death camp. It took
Clare more than 30 years to
write about his and his fam-
ily's experiences and espe-
cially about his murdered
parents.

During the war he fought
in the British Army and
after the war he became a
British intelligence offir
in charge of "democra,
re-education" in Vienna,
the city he had left eight
years before. After the war
he was befriended by Axel
Springer, the well known I ----
editor, who owns many
leading German newspap-
ers and magazines. Clare is(
working on behalf of the `-
Springer firm in London.
Clare's "Last Waltz in
Vienna" won England's W.
H. Smith Award as "the
most distinguished book of
the year" and portions were
read over British and Vie-
nna radio stations.
