the Law, an event which has
key theological implica-
tions for the existence of
Judaism and the Jewish

The word Shavuot
means weeks, and falls
on the 50th day conclud-
ing the seven-week count
begun on the second
night of Passover. The
count, which starts in the
spring at the time of the

bill calling for the dissolu-
tion of the 10th Knesset and
for elections next Nov. 2 was
introduced by the Shinui
faction Monday. But
chances are slim that it will
come up for a vote during
the - current Knesset session
and Shinui itself regards
the measure as a trial bal-
loon to test the intentions of
the two major parties rather
than a serious move toward
early elections.

Since the central theme of

it is important to mark the
night of Shavuot with in-
tensive study. The Torah is
not to be taken for granted.
We will not benefit from its
teachings unless we make
them a part of us. Therefore,
the study of the Torah has
