Rabbi Halpern, a na- tive of Montreal, received his rabbinical education at Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University in New York City and at Mir and Radn yeshivot in Poland, where he re- ceived his ordination. He holds a master's degree in sociology from the University of Detroit, where he also served as lecturer. Prior to his appointment Rabbi Emeritus Israel I. Halpern will be presented the Israel Bond "Jerusalem, City of Peace" Award at a tribute dinner in his honor sponsored by Cong. Beth Abraham Hillel Moses on behalf of the Israel Bond campaign. Beth Abraham in Detroit in 1949, he served pulpits in Canada and Massachusetts, and as a chaplain in the Canadian Army during World War II. He is a past chaplain of the Department of Michigan, Jewish War Veterans of the United States. Rabbi Halpern holds memberships in the Rab- binical Council of America and in its national youth commission, and is a past- chairman of its Michigan region; Council of Orthodox Rabbis of Detroit;. and past-president of the Rab- binical Commission of Met- ropolitan Detroit. He has served as a member of the counselling staff at Lawr- ence Institute of Technology for many years. He has served on the board of Yeshivath Beth Yehudah, Akiva Hebrew Day School, Mizrachi (Reli- gious Zionists of America), internal and community re- lations committees and broadcasting commission of the Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan De- troit. Officers to be installed with them are: Walter Cykiert, Dr. Harris Mains- Navon Weighing Political Options JERUSALEM (JTA) — President Yitzhak Navon says that he is considering a return to political life when his presidential term ex- pires next year. On the other hand; he might seek a second term as President because he enjoyed the office "very much," Navon told dele- gates to the meeting of the Political Committee of the European Parliament con- vening in Jerusalem. Navon said for the time being he was leaving both options open. "It will take at least eight-nine months be- fore I make a decision one way or the other," he said. The presidency of Israel is a non-political office. KLM to Close Kosher Kitchen AMSTERDAM (JTA) — KLM, the. Dutch airline, announced that it is closing its kosher kitchen at Amsterdam's Schiphol Air- port as of Oct. 1 because of a fall-off in demand for in- flight kosher meals and the lack of space. KLM, which has several flights a week to Israel, has been supplying kosher meals at Schiphol for its own flights and those of El Al, Israel's national air- line. Dinner Journal Dedicated to Rabbi Sperka RABBI SPERKA Young Israel of Green- field will dedicate its 22nd z anniversary banquet jour nal in memory of Rabbi Joshua Sperka. Rabbi Sperka served the congregation for more than 20 years and was active in the Orthodox community for more than 50 years.
