Controversial Author Offers Fresh Look at Holidays

By ESTHER

NEW YORK — Athur
Waskow offers a refreshing
approach to the ceremonies
and celebrations inherent to
the Jewish religion in "Sea-
sons of Our Joy: A Hand-
book of Jewish Festivals"
(Bantam).
Waskow is, because of his
conscience and his candor, a
controversial figure, having
identified himself with so-
cial action and political
causes (both American and
- -raeli) that were distinctly
ati-establishment. In the

religious arena, as a new-
comer to observance, he
explores traditional prac-
tices enthusiastically, yet
seeks alternative ap-
proaches with innocent dis-
regard for the unyielding
precepts of halakhic
Judaism.
While equal time is given
to innovative manners of
celebration, many of the

ceremonies espoused do con-
form to the traditional
mode. (His recom-
mendations of prayer books,
for instance, are Orthodox
publications.) The format is
that of a manual to the
calendar of Jewish festivals
answering the how's and
why's of ritual and celebra-
tion. For each "holy day"

his conclusions are, un-
doubtedly, disputable.
While his exuberance is
engaging for all, his main
audience will be those to
whom Jewish living is a
matter of rediscovery_ or
"rebirth." For those born
and raised in practicing
Jewish homes the book will
be an interesting, though
not a basic reference,
worthwhile- especially for
the illustrations which are
papercuts by Martin Farren
