THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 22 Friday, May 28, 1982 Churches Ask Unconditional U.S. Talks With the PLO WSU Holocaust Volume Praised The new volume on the Holocaust by Alice and A. Roy Eckardt has received critical acclaim from Rev. Franklin H. Littell, founder and honorary chairman of the National Institute on the Holocaust. Dr. Littell wrote the fol- lowing congratulatory let- ter to Dr. Bernard Goldman of the Wayne State Univer- sity Press, publisher of the Eckardts' "Long Night's Journey Into Day": "I have received a copy of the book by the Eckardts and I want to compliment you on it. "In the first place the book is very important, reaching a new high point in the work of the Eckardts, which has for years been outstanding in terms of the Christian relationship to the Jewish people. "In the second place, it is artistically one of the most beautiful books that I have seen put out in recent years. "I lecture two or three times a week some place in the United States or abroad, and I am usually involved in some issue that affects Christian/Jewish relations. I am referring constantly to the Eckhardts book and hope that both publishers and authors get the finan- cial as well as moral satis- faction out of its production which they_ deserve." . (JTA) — The American Jewish Committee has strongly criticized a section of a Middle East resolution adopted by the governing board of the National Coun- cil of Churches which called upon the United States gov- ernment to "undertake an open dialogue ) with the PLO" without requiring the PLO to repudiate its an- nounced aims for the violent destruction of Israel. AJC reaction was issued here by Rabbi Marc Tanen- baum, AJC's national inter- religious affairs director, and Rabbi A. James Rudin, assistant director. Rudin represented the AJC at the NCC government board as an official fraternal ob- server. While acknowledging that the NCC resolution contains a number of posit- ive affirmations about Is- rael and Egypt and the Camp David peace process, the two AJC spokesmen de- plored the fact that "this latest resolution fails to urge two preconditions for any governmental dialogue with the PLO, namely, the PLO's recognizing Israel's right to exist as a sovereign state and the cessation of all hostile acts carried out against Israel. . "This resolution can only lend legitimacy to the PLO, the pivotal Brown Tells Jewish Editors AWACS Should Be Withheld SAN DIEGO (JTA) — Gov. Such unqualified support for the PLO in peace negoti- ations, the AJC officials said, will only contribute to the hardening of positions and will inhibit the cause of Middle 'East peace rai,her than advance it.
