A medal depicting the
likeness and rescue efforts
of Raoul Wallenberg will be
added to the Jewish Hall of
Fame medals collection at
the Judah Magnes Museum
in Berkeley, Calif., accord-
ing to Mel Wacks, a member
of the board of directors* of
the American Israel
Numismatic Association.
Wacks, numismatic con-
sultant to the Magnes
Museum, was in Detroit
this week to talk to the Is-
rael Numismatic Society of
ichigan.
Displaying the bronze,
numbered plaque, Wacks
explained that only 100
were cast. They were hand
finished by the sculptress
Marika Somogyi, whose
parents were indirectly
saved by Wallenberg's ef-
forts and whose husband,
directly benefited, when
Wallenberg sent the then 13
year old to be hidden in a
monastery.

Cast in bronze, the Wallenberg plaque bears the
likeness of Wallenberg on one side, while the obverse,
pictured above, depicts him "enfolding a large group
of desperate men and women and children in his
oversize protective cape," according to the plaque's
sculptress, Marika Somogyi.

Shavuot Customs Explained

The custom of decorating
the synagogue with foliage
on the festival of Shavuot
can be linked with the tradi-
tion which claims that on
this holiday judgment is
made by the Almighty over
the trees and fruits deciding
upon their productivity.
Decorating the syna-
gogue with greens reminds
us of this aspect of judgment
which takes place on this
day. -
Others claim that it re-
minds us of the ancient cus-
tom of bringing the "first
fruits" to the Temple on that
day.
In another holiday cus-
tom some people stay
awake all night on the
night of Shavuot.
Some claim this is done
because when the revela-
iion- first took place at
Mount Sinai (an event
which is commemorated by
this holiday), the Jews
lacked deep awareness and
excitement which they
should have had in the case
of such an exciting event. To
make up for their deficiency
we still stay awake on this
night to demonstrate our
great interest in the revela-
tion of the Almighty.

Files Released

STOCKHOLM — Work-
ing on the supposition that
Raoul Wallenberg is still
alive, the Swedish govern-
ment released documents
,detailing its efforts for the
past 20 years to discover the
fate of the rescuer of
20,000-50,000 Jews during
the Holocaust.
Wallenberg disappeared
in Budapest in 1945. The
Soviet Union claims he died
in 1947, but witnesses have
testified seeing him in later

The mystics claim that
this holiday is an anniver-
sary of the "wedding" be-
tween the people of Israel
and the Almighty. In an-
ticipation of such a great
event, the "bride" (the"
people of Israel) spends the
evening before the wedding
preparing herself with love
and anxiety. Similarly,
Jews demonstrate their in-
tensity of love for learning
by staying up all night to
study on the evening of the
holiday.
